Harddrive mod power req.

Hi all,

I have a 60GB CECHCxx PS3 with a worn out bluray laser (dvd laser still works so it can play ps2 titles)

I want to use an external 3.5" harddrive powered and connected to the internal drive connector through the harddrive slot. This way i can also slide the original bracket in and use the original 2.5"drive.....

I can use a regular sata+power extension cable for this fitted to a spare bracket but i do want to know if the PS3 is capable of giving enough power on the internal drive connector.

The 2.5"drive is rated 0.48A on the 5.volt line.
The 3.5"drive is rated 0.65A on the 5.volt en 0.6A on the 12volt line.

So can the internal sata connector handle these power loads or do/can i pull a 12 volt wire from the PSU and solder it to the 12volt line at the board that feeds the sata power connector ?

See pic !

UPDATE !!! UPDATE !!!

Ok , so i went ahead and soldered the wire as in the pic.
Now i have 12 volts on the internal sata power connector as well....

I connected a sata + power extension cable and now have a 3.5 1TB Drive external running via de internal sata+power connector.... and works !

I joined this forum after looking for a voltage mod to do something similar to my ps3, though I'm using a 7500rpm 2TB 64mb cache partitioned into two 1TB partitions, installed inside a modded lower case. Can you take more pics of your wiring please?

There is a pic for that...but it is a little pointless given that all the systems have different mainboards so that pic probably does not apply to your system. The easy way? Just connect to the big fat metal prong going into the bottom of the power supply...that works on every version even the slims.
