Boot ps3 form external hd?

I recently got the ylod after downloading the latest update. In the system recovery menu the playstation has issues trying to accesses the hard drive. I've replaced my hard drive with the hd from another ps3 and concluded that the hd is good. I'm left thinking that my sata died (I'm running out of ideas here). Is there any way to remove the sata hd and boot from an external usb?
I'm using one of the old fat 80s

Yeah. In recovery mode every option either resets the ps3 and i get the ylod, gives me a hard drive error or the update keeps searching.

Yeah. at the end of the update i got the ylod. Sony said "flashing light $150 please" and that it had nothing to do with the update. I can go by a referb for that. Figure I may as well play with it and see what I can do. I'm not yet convinced it's dead.

I can try reballing it but idk if that's the problem. I guess it's worth a try but I'm really good at losing screws. :0
