Okay I've been out of the mod scene for a looong time. Last time I was involved was when alex was headlining the cfw scene for PSP cfw in ?06-07? and came under lawsuit (and then some new team showed up and people were speculating it was alex gone incognito... etc). To make a long story short I haven't been involved in any of this since Gamefaqs stopped letting people discuss homebrew/cfw/emulation on their PSP board.

So I've read a lot (I've been looking at this stuff for the last couple hours), but I'm getting conflicting answers in some places... and having trouble finding some info so I thought I'd clarify a few points. Please bear with me and correct me if anything I say is wrong/incomplete. And please don't just throw links at me... believe me I've done my research, it's just a lot of the answers seem to change on a weekly basis. I really need to know the definite current state of affairs.


->First and most importantly there is absolutely no way to play online through PSN with cfw right? Dual booting, blue sticking, DEX, spoofing, etc will not allow you to use PSN under any circumstances? Not even for the PSN store? Not even for games requiring under 3.55ofw? Not even for trophy synching? As a cfw user there is no way I will ever ever be able to use any PSN functionality, correct?

->If the above is not true, what can I touch the PSN with? Do I need dual booting or spoofing of current ofw? Can I make a PSN account and update trophies without updating my ofw? Can I play online through PSN on older games?


->Second, can I keep anything from cfw if I update to ofw? Backups (PS1/PS3), emulators, .pkg files, homebrew, custom themes, boot sounds, etc, will I be able to keep anything if I 'upgrade' to Sony's latest and lamest?

If so what apps/homebrew would you recommend I install before I do upgrade (if I do).


->Thirdly, if, and only if there is absolutely no way to play anything online through PSN with cfw... how do ?global? LANs work (XLink for example). Do you actually end up playing with people in PSN or is the community isolated?

If it's an isolated community, is that community big enough for most popular games to satisfy one's thirst for online play?


-> Lastly, new versions of cfw came out constantly (a week lag behind Sony's ofw at most) when I was in the PSP scene. Is there some technical reason PS3 cfw seems to have started at 3.41 and ended at 3.55?


Please, answer what you can if you're actually confident you know the answer. I REALLY need to make a decision on whether to update this PS3. I'm using a fat CECHLO1 running 3.00ofw if that makes any difference.

You can dual boot, but that will require a lot of work. You can currently get on psn with this ****psn program, but I'm sure it is short lived. Then it is back to absolutely no psn. 3.55 is the last cfw because it is the last one we have private keys for. If you update to ofw, it won't format your hard drive so the game backups and such will technically be there, but you won't be able to use or see them. There is xlink but I haven't idea about it, because I never used it. I would recommend selling your low firmware ps3 if you don't want to jailbreak it. There are a lot of people seeking one and you can go get you another non jailbreakable console. Help your local scener.

Just a few more questions and I can go through with... selling the ps3/updating the firmware/ordering a flasher. This is it, I swear; I appreciate the help.

Dual booting requires hardware? Even if my PS3 is already at a low, malleable firmware? Does it require less hardware than if I was at ofw4.21 or is it like an all-in-one thing.

Dual booting is essentially partitioning the PS3 with 1 harddrive having the ofw files and 1 harddrive having the cfw files. Basically it's just an improvement on buying a dedicated psn ps3 and a dedicated cfw ps3 right?

If that's the case then why do I see "supports up to ofw4.11" and the like? Shouldn't you just be able to update the ofw whenever you need to on on the ofw side? If not then 95% of the time you can't use PSN anyways since you won't be able to update to the lastest ofw... or am I missing something.

You say I wouldn't be able to see any .pkg files/programs/backed up games installed once I switched to ofw. That shouldn't affect things like custom themes, bootsounds, etc, right? Or does each update default your xmb? If the custom content gets kept, would Sony instant ban your PSN for having non-approved/signed files on your PS3?

I was planning to sell the PS3 rather than update it if I don't go the cfw route. What would be a good selling price considering the alternative is getting a dongle/flasher and running a greater risk of a brick.

custom boot logo and sounds will be lost as this is stored within your firmware.or at least it reset when going to ofw also you can update to latest firmware by accident because when trying to play some games for the first time it prompts you to witch firmware is needed to run that game and then provides a link this is often why some people use a spoofed firmware.may i ask what firmware your console is on and what type of console it is ie fat,slim cechg,???

Install 3.55 CFW. Then DEX and enjoy psn while it still works.
