Just fixed my ps3's ylod with a towel and a hairdryer :)

i have had the console for 4 years and yesterday it broke.

about a month ago i cleaned out my ps3 and cut cooling holes and repasted,
then it got ylod (must of been the crappy solder used) so i then fixed it,

first i took the ps3 shell off and removed the blueray psu and hdd,
then i wrapped it in two towels with the vent holes facing me.
i then got a 2000w hairdyer and blew hot air into the vents for 15mins at a distance of 3cm remembering to change the angle every so often.

after 15 mins of heating the ps3 was so hot u couldnt touch it so i left it for 40 mins to cool.

i reassembled the ps3 and it runs sweet and i didnt have to split the heat sinks or anything

its probably the easiest fix ever for ylod

hope someone else finds this method useful

Keep doing that, After a few times i would imagine something will warp. Why not just pull it all apart Inspect + Clean everything -> remove and re-apply new heat sink? A fine cloth or if you have the equipment a air compressor and gun makes things easier.

Did you also use the messy **** that you should use after soldering on boards? Can't remember what it's called, It protects it.

when i took it apart a month ago i did the whole lot.
i cleaned the motherboard with a soft brush and used tim to clean bits.
i repasted with artic silver and did case mods to keep it cool check my pics

when i started taking it apart it was still clean so i just heated the board through the vents.

Oh how you know so little. Most can be fixed with a simple reflow, cleaning and improved cooling. I did a reflow for a customer June of last year and he still plays on it everyday without issue. He also keeps it clean and in an open area now. The cooling system (like the 360) was poorly designed. A reflow and some other means to cool it is key. I just did another reflow for a friend and he drilled holes into the bottom of the ps3 and put a laptop cooler underneath it. His has been going strong for the last 4 months without issue.
