GLOD FUBAR?

Picked up this CECHG01 PS3 with no video a while back. Turns out to be GLOD, i have confirmed this, and have made just about every effort of restoration aside from reball and reflow. I dont have the money for a reball and my heat gun does not display temperature or have temp control so before investing in a new one I wanted to gather your guys' opinions as to whether restoration is even probable.

So I am not too familiar with the symptoms of a failed reflow but someone failed miserably with what I believe was a RSX reflow, please correct me if I am wrong. What is it that was used that would leave it looking like this...

http://www.ps3hax.net/picture.php?al...pictureid=3253

Please note that the pic of the RSX has the heat shield removed ( I tried arctic silver 5 below and above the heat shield in a desperate attempt but of course it didn't fix it.) The thermal paste that is shown is literally caked on from what I believe is due to excessive heat, I cant get it off on the four corners even with a razor blade....well i got the middle of the chip within an hour and gave up on the corners after another had passed.....Help or opinions would be much appreciated...

Oh and what do you guys recommend in regards to cleaning the motherboard and its electrical components? Thanks..

What is GLOD? Do you mean YLOD?

Assuming YLOD did you try reflow via throwing it in oven?

No I meant Green Light Of Death. So its a loosely used term to describe a set of symptoms that are accompanied by a green light that cannot power off. Basically no video, no audio, no usb recognition and the console can power on with green light but cannot power off without hitting the back switch. In regards to the oven I am a little weary of this. Do you condone this? I like to have as much control over the situation or experiment as possible.

EDIT: Been shown to be caused by problems with RSX, usually due to lost contact with the board...

Yeah no recovery...So I do not know what happened to the original photo but I created an album and posted the URL in the original post. So I guess the best way to get help is to simplify the question....Is it common for reflows to produce a black residue like that depicted?

The question applies to anyone who can offer assistance or has any ideas please and thanks...

See that's where my problem stems, I am assuming it is flux but have never used it personally so I don't really have anything to base it off of. I got it off EBAY and the guy swears he never opened it...I will be trying the oven trick as soon as time permits, but like you said, it looks like the thermal damage got out of hand so who knows if it will work....I'll post the results.

No still pending...I have been occupied with another project and work. After reading up on the oven fix I think I am going to go with that. Problem is I owe a s*** load of money to the gas company lol
