n00b questions

I've been around here for some time now, i'm quite familiar with the information regarding ps3 jb and cfw and such and well i was able to work myself a solid setup with internal/external games but just today i dug up my old ps2 games and was thinking of dumping them on internal or external whatever that works
it just seems whatever searching i do i end up with no so relevant info or just plain useless....
All i want to know is where to put my files, I've tried the hdd0\ps2iso and psxiso folders with iso and bin/cue images
what i already put shows up in the xmmb under retro cept everytime i try to run any of the images, i get "This operation is not allowed. Cobra USB required. .."
Am I missing something? from all the readings i've done i've gathered the ps2 images should work just fine... so i'm assuming i'm either not placing the files at the correct location or i'm just plain st00pid

Thanks for reading this, any help or pointers much appreciated
Fredo
