A spoof prevents accidentally updating. It tells the $ony update servers you are on the latest firmware while you are on 3.55 CFW. You don't want to know how many PS3's got updated by friends, family, GF's etc. because no spoof was installed. If no update screen is presented, no accidentally update can be done

And no, this can't be used for PSN. PSN uses another kind of protection and checks

How to get the XIpassphrase (i.e the missing piece to get on PSN with CFW) is on the ps3devwiki, you just need to be able to read and comprehend(2 seemingly easy, yet oddly hard things to do) and then put into practice what you garnered from the wiki

Well they can try to bug me all they want, I don't know how to get the XIpassphrase or care to. What i know about the XIpassphrase is thanks to the WikiBro
