New to linux - Help please.
Hey, Im looking for some advice/help.
I will be getting a ps3 in the next few days that has firmware 2.52 The laser in this ps3 is burnt out but I can fix that. My questions are: What Firmware should i update to that will work best for linux? What version of linux is the best to install? And will I need to fix the laser first or can I do that later?(does linux install from disk only or can it be done via usb) I have a ps3 on 3.55kmeaw and another on 3.73OFW so Im not after best firmware overall, just the best for running linux. A link to a tutorial on installing linux would be great too. Ive seen a few but as I am not familiar with linux Im not sure what Im looking for..... Thanks!

ok red ribbon rc5 u can install from usb stick or run live from usb easy and simple to install , its made for the ps3 and also made from debian linux . there is other linux you can install via intenet check out gitbrew http://wiki.gitbrew.org/wikibrew/PS3:Linux and http://wiki.gitbrew.org/wikibrew/PS3:OtherOS%2B%2B i peffer red ribbon cos its fast you should install 3.55 ofw you might need a blu ray by pass so u dont go into a update loop cos of to lazer. then install what ever cfw b u want but also blu ray bypass version , u can make a by pass version with mfw builder . |

Use MFW builder to make a firmware that skips the optical drive check. The "best" linux varies from person to person, but Red Ribbon is a good starter linux...most of them are easy to setup...that one is downright silly...it even installs the drivers for you...although not the latest updates last time I checked.

There's no need to patch out the BR drive if it's just a laser, just keep the drive connected (or just the logic board like I did) and there's no problem..
I'd just grab one of Gitbrew's FW's, if you're looking for the "best" Linux FW, then use either 3.41/3.55 vanilla, or else 1/8th 3.55 if it's mainly for Linux, which will give GameOS 1/8 of HDD space, the first 2 are 50/50. All the FW's I've linked are with SS patched which aren't good for gameplay on GameOS, but best for a proper Linux experience! :D The official Gitbrew guide is the best, if you've any issues, there are plenty of people to help. You're best off to read through it before even starting anything, so you get a feel for it. - LINK (skip the "VFLASH region 7 section"). Red Ribbon is damn easy to start off with, as KB said. Just burn to disk or extract to root of USB drive and select it from Petitboot. BTW, if you're near Dublin and get stuck, I could always knock over and help! :P Here's a more step-by-step guide : http://pastebin.com/UnBf5tTC

BTW...step 10 of those instructions are not terribly noob friendly; you have to type "cd /tmp/petitboot/mnt/sda1" (i think that is it) and hit enter, then "sh create_hdd_region.sh" and hit enter.
