I believe today is the day the internet can take a huge **** in America.(READ)
http://americancensorship.org/
(yes I saw the related thread but it's long gone) Basically, today the American congress is hearing out this bill. Some of the dangers of this passing are listed on the site. Normally i'm the type to go "meh" at petitions, but when I think about it, I can even face jail time for simply having gameplay videos on youtube(and i have like around 100ish(!)). |

It's a little off topic but, also today Canada had voted against and shot down the CRTC's ruling of trying to introduce usage based billing for big telecom companies.
BIG leap, hopefully the USA will not take the dive too..

...the leads are weak.
Ok so I guess it was more on topic because it's off topic in an off topic forum, therefore making any such off topic topic, topic of off topic discussion...

i believe it is our right to have no censorship on the internet. if anything they should be going after people who are posting child pornography on the internet, instead of wasting their time with this.

It actually got even worse at the last moment when they made some more amendments to it...then it passed. It is on hold due to one person, and he can only hold it for a very short time. The government is committed to killing the last free communications method remaining (the internet), and it appears they will do so.
They blocked almost everyone who would have been against the bill...free speech advocates, the entire tech sector with the exception of google, the independent press and media makers, the people that would be responsible for implementing the draconian measures, and the people who created the internet as we know it today. None of these people testified. The politicians don't give a crap about right and wrong, and they don't care about public opinion. It took the bill supporters about 8 months to get the 10,000 signatures they needed to introduce this, and it took the opposition about 72 hours to get 700,000 signatures against it...but the opposition is being shut out anyway. This is about fascism, and there is no room for public opinion when it comes to fascism. The really incredible part is the selection of people who support this bill. They are the typical anti-piracy, higher prices crowd you would expect, but this bill is not about either of those. It is about destroying the "above ground" internet, which has become a vital part of their businesses, while creating a thriving "underground" internet where EVERYTHING is free. Personally, I would welcome this if the average user had more technical skills. The underground internet could eliminate all the restrictions that currently exist as well as the new ones...but the reality is that most people wouldn't even try to get on it (assuming the knew about it), and this would result in an overall decline of the internet, a drop in sales of internet devices, computers, and internet service, and higher prices across the board. |

No idea if my vote will count for anything at all, but I noticed they had a button for us foreign to the USA, and I clicked it.
