Repair question

I just got done fixing a problem with my ps3. I bought it with the USBs broken,(someone had broken a trace by scraping the board pretty bad) I put more thermal compound on the c/gpu closed up everything (kinda gave up putting the Blueray back in >.> damn ribbon cable!) plugged it in and hooked it up to the tv, turned it on and everything, switched from my HDMI cable to AV cable to see if that would effect the controller working (no clue why it didnt work )) saw it say hard disk was wrong or whatever and realized I forgot to put the harddrive back in, shut it off turned the power switch off and slid the harddrive back in, turned it on and it just turns on for like a second, beeps 3 times and just blinks red till I turn it off. Suggestions? I don't think its YLOD because well.....it was on for less then 10 minutes.

Its more likely to be the toaster causing the controller not to work than it is the HDMI/AVI cables mate

Did you make sure the fans are working after you put everything back together? Also make sure the hdd is in properly and see if you can hear if it spin up once you turn the ps3 on (that may be a bit difficult to hear)

Also unless you damaged the blu-ray drives ribbon cable you going to have to open it up again anyway to fix it if you want to play backups (you need a disc in the drive while running most backups) so you may as well carefully open it again and make sure everything is correctly placed and that all cables are properly seated.

If it still doesnt work then Im afraid you have a busted ps3 mate.Usb's broken, controllers arent working...sounds like something could be faulty and those 2 problems are connected somehow hey...

Apart from the usb and the control it also sounds like a case of early YLOD symptoms Im afraid

First try this to check if you plug the fan:

1. Turn off ps3 from on/off button on the back.

2. Press the eject button.

3. While pressing the eject button, turn on the ps3 from the back.

If you hear the fan then you need to do again the YLOD fix (except thermal comp. you must "burn" the cpu with a thermal pistol 350 oC for 5')

the damned cable wouldn't go back in, I wriggled it, pushed it softly, angled it, pressed it firmly, shoved it, pressed it hard, it went like half way and wouldn't go any farther in so I said screw it. The USBs might work, I plugged my PSP into it and it looked like it was charging, the controller might not work because I bought it off Ebay for $1. Yes the fan turns on it whirrs up and iI can hear it kick on when the lights green but then everything shutf off , it beeps three times and flashes red.

Did you clean the old thermal paste off before applying the new stuff? It needs to be spotless.

Also, the ribbon cable might be missing a clip that holds it in place. You can use thin plastic (like a milk container) and make a shim out of that to hold the cable in place. The Blu-ray drive is pretty important in order to get it working fully (otherwise it won't play games or run applications) but it will boot.

flipped the switch to off, held the eject button and flipped the swtch back on, it beeped and nothing more, Did I plug the fan in wrong or something? It was working and booting up till I plugged the HDD back in and how could it YLOD not even being on for 10 minutes, not being anywhere hot and not even feeling warm.

My grandpa just put a huge glob in the middle over what was already there, and the blue thing came off because it bent from my pushing

Well then there's your problem.. You need to clean off that old stuff properly using cotton buds and something like ArctiClean or similar, you'll find it in a local PC store. It needs to be cleaned and applied very carefully!

Here's an example of how to use the cleaner and an example of how clean it should be - http://www.arcticsilver.com/reviews/...review_pg2.htm

Here's how to apply the thermal paste : http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showp...0&postcount=15

I heard I shouldn't use arctic silver because its semi conductive, I have Q-tips and alcohol to remove the junk and the compound I have at hand is...GC Electronics Specialty Silicone Compound. Do I need better?

I use AS5 on tonnes of PS3's and Xbox 360's, it's my all time favorite. I haven't got any experience with the one you've shown me, so I can't advise but it seems to focus on insulating rather than transferring heat.

The thermal paste is very important, it takes the heat away from the CPU and RSX into the heatsink to be cooled by the fan. It's essential if you want the PS3 to work and hopefully live a long (cold) life, so you should look for the best you can get and AS5 is quite common, even in little old Ireland!

I've tried loads of different types but AS5 works best every time for me. I've tried MX-2 and MX-3 but I hated them tbh, there are others but they were own-brand.
