I have a ps3 with red screen and was wondering were to start to try and fix. It has been sitting for about a year and time to do something with it. I don't know if I should update it, is there any way to update with my iPad? The ps3 sits on shelf and was about 13 month old when it broke, mostly Netflix. Any ideas would be good.

There are a number of things you could try. Before updating though, go to recovery menu and check what firmware it wants. If it's 3.55 or below you might be able to fix it by downgrading but first try these options.

1.Try recovery menu options
2.Try to update to same firmware or higher, wouldn't go higher than 3.55 otherwise you can't downgrade.
3. Pull out harddrive and format on your pc or external station and put back in.
4. Might be a loose cable to your blu ray drive or other component, check your cables.

Every thing inside ps3 looked good it said it wants 3.50 or higher, none of the recovery options help, I guess it's time to try and format hard drive .

When I try and use restore file system it tells me that my hard disc is corrupted and will be restored, it start restoring at 0 and makes to 100 in about 30 seconds and then the red screen again. Bad hard drive?

Could be, try formatting on pc or external docking station before changing hard drive. It's a good thing you are at 3.50 at least, then you can try downgrading if the hard drive option fails.
