Question Downgrading firmware from 4.00 to 3.55?

Hello everyone-

My apologies if this questions has already been asked, but I looked and didn't see it in this section already. Anyway, I'm totally new to the ps3 modding/homebrew scene and I recently (stupidly) updated my new first-gen ps3 to 4.00, I was wondering if it was possible to downgrade the console on 4.0 to 3.55 or whatever the highest hackable firmware currently is? I also want to be able to use MULTIman, so if that impacts which custom firmware I need please let me know. The only reasons I want to hack my console is to play "backup" copies of games I own and play media formats not natively supported on the console. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me, and happy new-ish year!

-Cheers, bobofosho123

It is possible to downgrade your ps3. You need a hardware flasher(progskeet or E3 Flasher) to downgrade. The best cfw are either rebug 3.55.2 or kmeaw 3.55. There are many threads that have tutorials that would help you here. Good luck and enjoy

So there's no way to downgrade using the currently available mods without a hardware device? I generally try to avoid messing with the hardware in any console as I'm just not experienced enough to do it, so is there anyway to do it just via a soft-modding? If not, I'll just patiently wait, or not. Hehe.

There are devs currently working on cfw 4.00 but does not support peek&poke(allow you to play your backups). In order to play backups, you have to downgrade with a hardware flasher.

Alright, gotcha. Just out of curiosity, was it the dev's decisions to not support the the playback of backups? Or is it something related to software/hardware limitations, or something along those lines? Also, in your opinion, what's the cheapest and easiest to install hardware flasher for the ps3 that you know of? Thanks again for all the help.

Two things: 1. Kakarotoks does not support piracy. 2. peek and poke would be difficult to implement.

The devs currently working on 4.00 cfw do not support piracy. That's the reason why peek&poke won't be implemented. It's not do to limitations..... As far as prices, I'm clueless, sorry. Which one is better? I many on this forum are using E3 Flasher. But some might say otherwise. You can do a little searching on google to compare and search the forum as far as other members' opinion. Good luck

thanks guys

hey guys, I just want to add to this forum post as well.

I am a recent ps3 user, and as well been paying attention to the jailbreak picture, but am quite a newb. I just want to say thanks for being helpful to the common questions such as these involving downgrade questions which probably have been answered repeatedly.

Something i wanted to ask was- I noticed that kakaroto recently released out a "CFW", and it seems that this is a huge breakthrough in the jailbreak scene (practically every website that has a blog is retweeting his post). So does his release mean anything to me and others that are in FW4.00 and am waiting in terms of possibility in non-additional hardware jail breaking? Does this CFW tool work for all recent firmware versions?

In addition, although kakaroto released his cfw, other programmers will have to jump on this and work on it to release a jailbreak to enable backup/pirated games to be played in the ps3, is this correct?

Thanks for all your help.

Kakarato hasn't released his HEN (Not CFW) to my knowledge.

As far as how it will be implemented, it slated to be an opening for 4.00 OFW users to have homebrew accessibility. No backup managers such as multiMAN or Rogero Backup Manager.

like you've been told the only way to downgrade from 4.00 is with a hardware flasher such as the E3 flasher. of course it's ridiculously expensive ($90/€90 because retarded resellers) but it's the only way.

4.00 probably won't have CFW because sony pretty much killed those with 3.56 AFAIK. i personally don't like kakaroto at all but so far he's the only one i know who's working on a homebrew enabler. once we have that it will be easier for other devs to find ways to run backups since that's what game console jailbreaking is all about.
