Hello to you all, I've started this post for I got a few questions about PS3, as I may be buying one soon. I also apologize if this post isn't where it shouldn't or if questions are too dumb, since I'm new to this I litterally know nothing about it (and of course I'm not familiar with most terms :S).
First of all how is it possible to JB it so it would read non original discs? what are the disvantages of doing it? is it possible to play online that way? do you get banned from something? what about private servers? will it ony read original movies? what are other important things I should know?

first of all, welcome to the forums man, glad to have you here. Second of all, what's your console model ? check it on the back of your ps3 or underneath it. It should be CECH... something. Then we can answer your questions

edit: oh and your firmware version xD. Settings -> System Settings -> System information

I do not own one at the moment, I may be getting it in a couple of months so I guess it would be the last one they've released and the firmware it would come with it :/ no idea

If you don't own one and are going to buy one try to find a PS3 with 3.55 or less firmware. No online gaming with PSN with a Custom FirmWare PS3 and we use the harddisk for backups, not disks.
Ow, and don't buy a CECH-3000+ series PS3, they are extra protected by $ony and unhackable for now...

when you say to try to find it with a 3.55 you mean I should try to buy it from someone? what about buying it from a store? is it possible to downgrade?
isn't there a way to play online with other jailbroken devices, sort of hamachi or something? how does using harddisk instead of backups work? do I download the game or buy a non original disk and save it in the hard disk?

edit: oh BTW, are new games not able to be played on jailbroken devices(due to firmware incompability)? if so, what big games are this case?

If you buy a PS3 from a big store there is a big change the latest FW (firmware) will be on it. Small stores in little places may still have PS3's with FW 3.55 or lower in stock. It depends, the longer you wait the smaller the change to get one, that is for sure

Downgrading is a problem, PS3's can only be downgraded to the FW they were sold with and can only be done with special hardware flashers if you are above FW 3.55.

Yes there is, it is called xlink kai, info can be found here on PS3Hax, don't expect to much about it...

You can make backups from your original disks to a fat32 formatted external HD or to the internal HD, or you can pirate software by downloading it from the internet but we don't help with that. You have to find out your self but it is not that difficult...

u can still buy 3.55 ps3's from stores you need to look of ps3 bundles eg the gt5 bundle or the modnation racer bundle as these are both 3.55 games then so will the ps3 be 3.55 but imho your best being on latest ofw and buying your games theres only so many times you can play thru old games and theres only peeps playing black ops on xlink just my 2 cents tho

is Jailbreaking a software modding or does it have to be physically changed? (like xboxes)
I doubt I'd buy it at a Sony store, so perhaps I can find it with 3.55 firm, but how can I tell what firm it comes with from its box(in case I don't find a bundle? has it been a long time since 3.55 came out?
I'm guessing the last update is 4.0 and thinking it's a wide gap between 3.55 and 4.0 makes me think there are new games that wouldn't run on a JBen PS3, say BF3, CODMW3, Uncharted, etc?
can't think of something else at the moment.
