i think it is time to take the hardware failure rate out of the 360 cons sense the jasper mobo(one before the slim) the 360 has been just as reliable as the ps3 if not more, you dont here people listing dead lasers on the list of ps3 cons as it was taken care of(yes they still happen but not as often) also the pros for each are more to your taste
oh and sony didnt just sue geohot they sued graf also who is a far better dec then geohot only cons the 360 has are more on how you look at it like bluray if you have a bluray player then it doesnt mater(like me i have one in my pc and a set top one) paying for online again the service is far better then psn so its a moot point(price for a year goes from 35-60 if you know were to look u never pay more then 40) not being able to use your own hdd, if you know what you are doing you can use your own. the new dash is ugly(more me hating it then anything) ps3 cons sony have become scumbags and are know for removing features the online is meh can be very laggy(you get what you pay for) loading time can be high on games(most games have a mandatory some times optional hard drive install to help the loading time) netflix doesnt have as many hd videos as the 360 does(kind of a moot point) no hacks on new fws you have to solder to the mobo to downgrade to be able to use cfw and then you loose the ability to play online and play new games if you are looking to just play pirated games then you want to get a 360, ether one with a flashed disc drive or a rgh/jtag, with the rgh and jtag you can not get online but you are able to play any 360 including xbox live arcade games and dlc, if you get a rgh 360 you can get one with a dual nand set up and still get online but can only play your pirated games on the offline(hacked nand) with a flashed drive you can get online and play your pirated but it only allows for retail games to be pirated. you do risk the chance of getting banned from xbl but if you are not stupid(playing games before they come out, playing games after an update with out conformation). |

Just my thoughts to the original thread-starting question. I own a Wii (3 yrs), PS3 (2yrs), and XBox (acquired from Christmas). You didn't mention a Wii so I won't say much outside of very easy to soft-mod, great for kids, and online gaming exists, but not great. For me, the online gaming portion is moot because I have no interest in it.
I pretty much agree with what I've read by others so far in ref to the pros and cons of the XBox and PS3. No one mentioned anything about interactive motion games. The PS3 Move is much like the feel of a Wii. The XBox Kinect on the other hand, much different. Controller-less games are fun and the XBox's implementation using an individual's movements to drive the game is superior to the others. It's young and a little clunky yet, but bound to get better. Is modding the most important thing? If so, I wouldn't go with a brand new PS3. And if going for used/pre-owned, I'd probably dig for one that has 3.55 OFW or lower on it, unless the seller has already modded it. I haven't researched modding the XBox in depth, but from my recollection, it's hardware mod only at this point. I'd yield to the opinions of others more learned in that specific area than myself. In the final analysis, you likely really need to go with which one will offer the best experience for you. If you want to game and doing so online with friends is key, buying the same thing they have will probably serve you better because you know the titles will be available on that console. In the end, the best console is somewhat unique to the individual. I wish you luck in your decision. Cheers! |

But since you're only buying, I'd definitely go for a rgh 360 now. Just don't hack it yourself. Either buy it rgh'd or let a pro do it. That's my point. Sorry if I wasn't clear earlier. |

dont forget to hack the ps3(if its over 3.55) you will have to open the ps3 up also and from what i have seen the soldering on the ps3 is a lot harder then anything you have to do to the 360 |

Microsoft bad at Hardware
Sony Bad at Software Hardware for ps3 is great but the software and the homebrew are..... well not good put it that way. Hardware for 360 sucks but the software and homebrew is amazing. also they have they same type of security actually from what failoverflow reported the 360 has better security. I say get both like me
