Unhappy Game Updates Question

Hi All,

First off, amazing game manager Dean. Its great to have someone here who is dedicating time and effort to make a truly excellent piece of homebrew for the masses.

Now my question....

The ability to update a game from within multiman exists when you enter the game options menu (triangle or square). I backed up my fallout new vegas game last year, played for a while and decided to update to hopefully fix some bugs. Update went fine from within multiman and i kept on playing...... Left it a couple of months then updated the game again but now it asks me to update my firmware and wont let me in

So my question is this:
When you update a game from within multiman is there any sort of check carried out to stop you from installing an update that requires 3.6+?
Also:
I like to keep my games updated for bug fixes and what not, how can i tell if an update is "safe"

Hope someone can clarify,
Cheers

multiMAN game update only download the game updates that are compatible with your CFW version. It includes the version required by the update in the file name of the PKG, so it should be easy to know if it is safe to update or not.

BTW, if you delete the Game Data (not the game save) of your game, it should work again. It may need that you apply again the updates that are compatible with your CFW.

multiMAN does not prevent that you install any PKG. So if you downloaded the update from the game itself or from other sources, there is not an easy way to know.

You can also use the Game List 1.9.1 or PS3 Game Updater 1.41. They show the required FW version for each update.

02.05.00 -

* Changed: UPDATE function in GAME SETTINGS menu will not download updates for higher than your current PS3 firmware version
If you're using an older version of mM, it is possible that it allowed you to download update, which required higher firmware version.

Thanks for the info guys, both excellent responses which have shed light. I think i was on an early edition of multiman last year which is probably the reason it downloaded an updated that needed a higher FW.

I still need some things clarifying though....

I started to update my games through multiman following your responses and sure enough when each game download completes, the console restarts and there are the updates in the "install package files" folder. Now it gets tricky.

The first game i went to update was aliens vs predator and it had around 5 different updates i could install, i picked the most logical which had the highest version number but still within FW_03.5000 (im on 3.55 kmeaw) and it updated fine.
However....
when i went to install updates to subsequent games the update files for AvP were still there along with all those for the new game meaning the list was now longer and more confusing. I did the same for the third game and same effect but now i have an almighty list of updates from 3 different games and im confused as to which is which.

Heres my list:

BLES00585_[UPDATE_01_PS3FW_03.0000]_VER_01.01.PKG
BLES00585_[UPDATE_02_PS3FW_03.0000]_VER_01.02.PKG
BLES01031_[UPDATE_01_PS3FW_03.5000]_VER_01.09.PKG
BLES01040_[UPDATE_01_PS3FW_03.4000]_VER_01.02.PKG
BLES01133_[UPDATE_01_PS3FW_03.5000]_VER_01.03.PKG
BLES01161_[UPDATE_01_PS3FW_03.6000]_VER_01.01.PKG
BLES30144_[UPDATE_01_PS3FW_02.4000]_VER_02.00.PKG
BLES30463_[UPDATE_01_PS3FW_03.3000]_VER_01.04.PKG
BLES00585_[UPDATE_01_PS3FW_03.0000]_VER_01.01.PKG
BLES00585_[UPDATE_02_PS3FW_03.0000]_VER_01.02.PKG
BLES01031_[UPDATE_01_PS3FW_03.5000]_VER_01.09.PKG
BLES01040_[UPDATE_01_PS3FW_03.4000]_VER_01.02.PKG
BLES01133_[UPDATE_01_PS3FW_03.5000]_VER_01.03.PKG
BLES01161_[UPDATE_01_PS3FW_03.6000]_VER_01.01.PKG
BLES30144_[UPDATE_01_PS3FW_02.4000]_VER_02.00.PKG
BLES30463_[UPDATE_01_PS3FW_03.3000]_VER_01.04.PKG

And heres my questions (if you dont mind):

1. What is the rule of thumb for selecting an update when presented with a list of updates for any particular game? I guessed to just choose the highest available version without going over FW_03.5000 is this correct? There is a FW_03.6000 update in the list above, should this be avoided like the plague?
2. You will notice the list above has 16 entries. There are in fact only 8 updates here but they duplicate, i've noticed this also happens when i download an update for multiman itself and there are two identical package files to choose from. How do i stop seeing duplicates?
3. How do i clear out all the updates from the game i did previously? There are updates for three games above, because it didnt clear them out after AvP the list got longer, more confusing and now im lost.

Regards,

There is no workaround for the double appearance of the packages.

About the installation of the updates, I usually install them sequentially. So in your case I'd go like:

1) BLES00585_[UPDATE_01_PS3FW_03.0000]_VER_01.01.PKG
2) BLES00585_[UPDATE_02_PS3FW_03.0000]_VER_01.02.PKG

Some games require all updates to be installed so you need to install 1.01, then 01.02.

Oh really? Lol I used to think my internet was messed up when I just wanted to check for an update and got the message: couldn't retrieve information haha

Ok fair enough about the duplicates and I'm getting the idea with installing the upgrades in sequence but in my list there's a FW-03.6000 file, should I be avoiding these?

Also was there a method to clear out the list? I went straight to the highest version for AvP and there's now a pack of lesser updates that I can't get rid of

Yes, avoid anything above 3.55. The pkg files are downloaded either to the root of a connected usb stick/hdd or to multiMAN's USRDIR/PKG folder (or to the folder set in the options.ini: update_dir).

Where does the game data exist? Is it a folder in hdd0? I looked for the game data for new Vegas (it's still at the 3.6version even when I deleted/rebacked up) and the BLES009081 or whatever it is exists in about 3 different folders off the root from hdd0
