Reason for dual boot?

Just purchased my first playstation (ever) - a PS3 slim, upgraded to firmware v4.0 but confirmed that the original firmware was 3.4. Great.. per the info I've found on this site I know that I can use progskeet or E3 Flasher to downgrade to at least 3.55 and, with the Cobra USB, enjoy all the benefits that go along with jail breaking.

I see people talking about the dual boot feature of the E3 Flasher but I haven't been able to figure out why this is a desirable feature. I'm assuming it has something to do with wanting to keep historical achievements gained prior to jail breaking and/or playing over PSN. Is this correct?

And if I never intend to ever log on to PSN (have no friends, hate people) for playing online, and I am a brand-spanking-new playstation owner with no PSN history, can I buy the E3 Flasher without the sata/usb dock and just execute the firmware downgrade?

Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the Forums.

Dual boot is so you can have MFW and OFW on the same PS3.

They sell just the flasher without the Esata Station/Dual boot, see here:
