in multiman, did you try highlighting the game from the list, and try the select & X trick to load?

I had an odd similar error, I couldn't figure out, back when me and my gf bought our PS3. It was in the times before MultiMan required BDEMU though, but perhaps it will help anyway.
I couldn't play any games on the internal HDD that were placed in the GAMEZ folder, though guides said they should be placed there. I had to place them in the GAMES folder on the internal harddisk. Oddly, it made a difference. You can try moving a single game to that folder instead, and see how it works.

Btw, I'm on 3.55KMEAW and no downgrading has taken place whatsoever.
