Help with cpu terms

I'm thinking of getting my wife a laptop and not sure how cpus compare, not sure what the terms mean. I mean like duo core, quad core..it's kinda explanatory but still how do they rate to like I3, I5 and I7. I guess the I7 is probably the best or close to the best thing out there. Can anyone explain these to me and maybe a comparison of how fast they are.

Also came across this at circuitcity.com's website:

Gateway NV57H48u LX.WYY02.030 Notebook PC - Intel Core i5-2430M 2.4GHz, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, Blu-ray Player/DVDRW, 15.6" Display, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, Black

They want $500 for it...seems pretty good but again I'm not sure. It's still a little higher than what I wanted to spend but am considering it.

Be sure it has a decent graphic card (ATi or Nvidia), not the standard Intel GPU

My choice for a new laptop would be the i5 processor. i7 is a bit to much for a laptop IMO ....

It would mostly be used for web browsing, probably some streaming. Not so much for games, although maybe occasionally. Also was looking to keep it between 300-400 maybe a little more. Most of the sub 350 ones have everything my wife needs but it usually is like a dual core around 2.0 ghz or these e300's which is probably relatively slow. So I was trying to figure out like how these different cpus compare to one another like if you had to put them in order of speed. It seems like it was easier before, same with video cards. Heck I still using my old TI4200 card on my comp.

And it definitely has to have a dvd burner and hdmi. Bluray not so important. And a hard drive at least 320gb. And almost forgot my wife definitely wants a new one. When I started looking on ebay, I got that look...

Oh btw that gateway has a Intel HD Graphics 3000 GPU. So that's bad I guess.

yup women. i mean for web browsing and streaming you dont really need a high spec machine and i know i bought my wife a 2nd hand one (http://www.bigpockets.co.uk/product....roduct=SOLV774) which is fine for all that an thats fast enough for her, but it was refurbished
