The chipset for a next generation Xbox console has been in production since last month, and will go into full production by the end of the year, according to technology news reports. Tech site Fudzilla states, "Recent speculation that the new main System on a Chip (SoC) for the Next Xbox began production is apparently accurate; the SoC did indeed start production in late December of 2011. Sources tell us that the code name for the chip is Oban, and it is being produced by both IBM and Global Foundries for Microsoft." The report goes on to claim that, "the power behind the next Xbox will be a PowerPC CPU that is married to an ATI Southern Islands GPU, or modified 7000 series." It adds that the console is unlikely to ship at the end of 2012, with full production gearing in December of this year. "This first run of these 32nm Oban chips will be destined for developer consoles, so any hope for a holiday console release in 2012 seems unrealistic, according to our sources, but an announcement perhaps before the end of the year might be possible. It would seem Microsoft's strategy of getting it in 2013 is all but assured. We do think that the chips will be in production by the end of the year for consoles destined to be sold in 2013, which seems to agree with what others are saying." Additionally, tech site SemiAccurate offers similar speculation on a production timeline, as well as analysis of the various rumors flying around. We've already wrangled up everything we've heard so far in a recent Xbox 720 round-up, and this new information appears to support Michael Pachter's statement that "2012 launch rumors are silly" for Xbox 720.

I think that name is just being used because it's easy to distinguish it as the "next" in the Xbox brand of consoles since no one knows the definitive MS code-name for it right now...I mean at least 720 sounds cooler than "project cafe" for the Wii U!

Actually that was a rumour and has not been 100% confirmed yet as (for example) there was another name going around last year that then disappeared, strangely...

Regardless, it will definetly be known in the next 12 months like Xenon was back in the day for 360.

With as many "rumors" that I have seen regarding this unit, I take everything with a grain of salt. First it was the anti used system, then the one about how there would be no optical drive, oh and kinect 2. I will wait for an unveil. Only they know how they want to progress. Another rumor is that neither Sony nor Microsoft will unveil a new console at e3 this year. If that were true, then that probably means they are raping everyone during the Holiday 2013 period.

So many rumors

Did you know Valve has patented a controller, and has even suggested that they could end up in the hardware console war? All rumors. Sure it is nice to think you know, but you never really do. Look at how the PS3 was supposed to be compared to what it was at launch (lets not look at now )

The point being none of us will really know until, at the very earliest, E3 this year.

Regardless of how it is, what is true, and when they will actually unveil or release, I hate that rumor about no ODD in the next XBox (I dont like 720.) It is like the forces of good and evil. The consumer being the one that is good, Gamestop being evil (yes I see Lamestop as evil, especially considering they can make profit several more times off of a game than the devs that work hard to give us entertainment.) Good cant exist without evil and vice versa. The consumers want an optical drive if for nothing more than watching movies, or Heaven forbid, actually owning something physical with out leasing a license. With ODD based games, comes in Gamestop. I really would like to see my next 360 also work as a BD/DVD player.

Meh end rant I will probably end up getting a new XBox and a PS4. I hope sony comes strong this time (like they did with PS2) Also if Valve does come into the console race I would get Steam's box as well. It probably will not have an optical drive, but could you imagine your entire PC games library being compatible on your console? If they mix that one feature with a good online service (like Live), then they will be competitors to watch out for (even with my rant about no ODD on the next XBox)

I like to know what new technology it will offer. May be a they will b able to put more than 8 gigs on a disc. Lol. Wow. A new chip. Owww faster everything.

I was getting ready to hit the like button until I read that part. The PS2 is the only Sony system I have told said not to buy if asked about it. The only thing that I saw as being a strong point about the PS2 is that it played dvds out the box.
