Xbox 360 Used More for Entertainment than Gaming

Honestly, probably because M$ barely has any games to offer besides Halo and Gears, and you can only play so much of either.

Starting today, Xbox 360 owners can access content from cable giant Comcast, TV channel HBO and Major League Baseball.

Microsoft announced apps for entertainment services HBO Go, Xfinity and MLB.TV are available now to console owners. All three will take advantage of gesture and voice controls.

The HBO Go app adds the cable network's entire catalog on demand, featuring series such as Deadwood, Entourage and Game of Thrones.

"We've fully enabled the Kinect and (its) user experience including voice navigation," says Otto Berkes, senior vice president of HBO's Consumer Technology Group. "We tried to take full advantage of the functionality of Xbox."

The Xfinity app includes Comcast's On-Demand library, which features a variety of television shows and films, all searchable with either gestures or voice controls.

MLB.TV offers access to over 2,400 games and includes interesting touches such as the ability to shift to a splitscreen view to watch two games, then say "Switch" to flip between games.

"They bring a lot of fantastic content," says Yusuf Mehdi, chief marketing officer for Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business. "They really bought in to the ease of use to help consumers find and enjoy what they want."

Microsoft has slowly transitioned its Xbox 360 from a traditional video game console to an all-in-one entertainment device. Several apps are already available on the Xbox, including Netflix, Hulu Plus and ESPN.

Microsoft says the use of entertainment apps has doubled year over year and, for the first time ever, more Xbox 360 users were firing up their consoles for entertainment purposes than multiplayer gaming.

"We've really seen this amazing explosion at Xbox the last four months that's honestly even surprised our own hopes and aspirations," Mehdi says.

Alan Wake isn't exclusive anymore. It's coming to PC.

No problem though.

I had a nasty surprise a while ago. I (obviously) have a 360, and up until a month ago had a gold account on live. Never play online (or really even turn the thing on very much) so I cancelled it when it came up to renew. Much to my surprise, almost *nothing* works without a gold account. Netflix, Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, MSN Video, (and pretty much everything else) let's just say I'm not impressed. Seriously, MS? You need to pay a recurring fee to actually use the machine? To top it off, there's no web browser (don't confuse their joke of a "search engine" for anything web-related- it all goes back to their marketplace trying to sell you something)

Final straw, etc. I'm selling my 360s. Before they make you buy gold to play your games on it.

And I won't even start on how much I hate their new "Metro" styled dash.

You know what I see? I see a moderator that unintentionally started a fanboy flame war. Also @Annelies , alan wake is already on PC. It doesnt mean it will ever make it to PS though.

Besides, the only reason you are complaining about 360 now, is because you got that AP 2.5 violation.....
I never seem to have an issue finding something to play.

Didn't you try this arguing this point with pbanj 6 months ago? Of course people use the 360 for entertainment, but so do ps3 users. Why pay for cable and internet, if you dont really watch TV. If you do want something to TV watch then you can add Netflix, and Crackle is ok and it is free. Hulu plus should be called Hulu minus, I just hook my PC to my TV and watch hulu for free. The point being I can pay $100 a month for cable and internet, or I can pay $40 a month and always know that I can find something on if I want to watch TV. Dont bring up some random ass stupid point about entertainment uses when people flock to Netflix on PSN. I log into PSN, and you know what I see? I see a sad piece of **** ghost town, with the primary use of Call of Duty or Netflix

Fanboyism is wrong. All 3 current systems have a use, and yes I have owned all 3.

I have a PS3 (in fact, I have a few of each console)
I don't use online on either, and you know what? On the PS3, I'm not bashed over the head with PSN store (or whatever it's called now). 360 used to be okay as far as that goes, but with the latest update (and I'm pretty sure it was designed that way on purpose) *every* *f*cking* *page* on the dash has ads for their products and services. In what way does that "improve a users experience"? I paid for the damned thing, I bought the games, and I DO NOT approved being bombarded with advertisements every f*cking time I turn it on. Having to buy their Gold BS just to watch youtube (which I can do on my PC and PS3 for free) is nuts. I could go on, but why? You like 360? Fantastic! I don't.

If I remove the network cable I can't use it as a Media Center Extender. And I said I don't use either online. I use them to play games and media streamed from my PC. I suppose I could block Live in my router, but don't know how to and don't want to bother figuring it out either. Easier solution is to just sell the stupid things.
