Slim Internal HDD as external HDD - sorry
Hi there,
I'm embarrassed to post such an obvious question...so I'm sorry, I tried to search and just could not find it at all. I've just got a PS3 slim. I want to be able to connect my 2TB external HDD to the internal HDD connectors of the console. I opened it up to find to female connectors trying to mate unsuccessfully lol. I've clearly watched a PS3 fat tutorial and thought it was the same. Can an external HDD be rigged so that the cable goes inside? Do I need a sata adapter? The external hdd has usb and esata, then I've got an esata to sata adapter/cable. Thanks, Fishy |

Thanks Carldenning,
I realise that there could be problems re: esata/sata. I'm mostly wanting to know how to connect the internal slim connectors to an external hdd given they are female/female. |

Hi there is this product http://mrmodchips.co.uk/catalog/prod...roducts_id=451
but i have got a feeling its only for the phat systems as the port to plug in drive is on the side and for the slim I think it would need to be on the bottom edge. Edit: I have just looked at the e3 flasher thing that plugs in the hdd slot and the port is on the bottom so the above wouldnt work. Edit 2: Just found this http://www.ezflash.cn/ps3-hdd-expander/ but it says that a maximum 1tb can be used due to the ps3 limtations but reports on internet say 2tb have been formatted. Lighttake have it instock for $7 http://lightake.com/detail.do/sku.Hi...im_Black-42859 Last edited by Vampiror Nightstalker; 02-09-2012 at 04:05 AM. |

thanks for the effort Vampiror. So I can't believe that others have not ever asked the questions given that you can do it with the PS3Fat
Is it possible to have a slim connected to an external HDD through the internal sata connector? |

You could try and get a female to female power lead like this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Molex-2-x-...item3a683295ff and use a normal sata data cable.
But I am not sure if it would work as I have never tried it. Also you would prob have to strip down the system to plug it in as there isnt much room on the bay. |

Thanks Vamp. I appreciate your effort. I don't need power, I just need a sata data connection from the female internal PS3 ports to a normal female SATA cable.
In other words, it looks like while there is a cable connecting a SATA drive to a motherboard usually, in this case the PS3Slim has a 90 degree board which replaces the cable. Is it possible to connect the female internal connectors to a "normal" female SATA cable. Perhaps the problem is that I haven't opened the console and removed the internal 90 degree board (ie. should I connect the cable-going to the external drive-directly to the motherboard). I have not found online a SATA cable that has 2 male ends (ie male being what hdd's have poking out). If I had 2 male ends then I could connect the PS3Slim internal connectors to the SATA cable I have (which is female). I don't want the hdd to be inside the slim, I just want to be able to connect a sata cable to the slim's hdd bay in terms of data... Last edited by fishy31; 02-09-2012 at 04:48 AM. |

DOH! sorry. The cable needs to be female to male, I get it now! female for the hardrive and male for the ps3 motherboard? You basicly want to extened the ports to the outside of the ps3?
Would this do? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Male-Femal...item336f341228 or this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2x-Serial-...item56455eaf0f |

The Ps3 internal hard drive can currently (OFW 4.00) have an absolute maximum size of 1TB, the ps3 will not recognise any hard drives connected through the internal sata port bigger than 1TB , this may change in the futhure if Sony make changes to their firmware. The internal hdd is not formatted using FAT32 or NTFS it is formatted using Sonys CFS (cell file system) which will reserve 11% of any internally connected hdd for caching (which is crazy on larger hdds), for example if you install a 1TB hdd you will only be able to use about 900GB.
You can connect external hard drives also through the PS3 USB ports. Any storage device that is connected through the USB ports has to be formatted using the FAT32 file system or else the PS3 wont recognise it. The FAT32 file system can have a maximum size of 2TB (also cannot contain single files bigger than 4GB) . |
