Well Kojima used in the games too many theories, one of them it's like the movie from clint eastwood that he had to be transplanted with a heart and the heart was from a murdered woman and often in the argument of the movie, he see or recalls memories of the deceased woman.

I really need to play the old games before jumping into MGS4.

Thought about it, my uncle whose never gamed in his life played it over and over and over touting such words as "awesome" and "great".

I just can't bring myself to play the game without knowing any of the story's from the past (or future I guess one may argue).

You can play it, besides there are games (that are part of the story) for PSP, etc.
You can play MGS4 and then 3 snake eater, or the HD collection.
