Theory Behind the White Dots Problem?

Hi, just replaced my old PS3 phat one since it went red light with a new 160gb and i had the white dot problems which is explained and i solved with this video:

ps3 hdmi white blinking dots fix - YouTube

1) After fixing it i was wondering if it is a PS3 problem or a general bug with some Displays?

My old phat worked great with the settings that caused the problems.

2) do disabling this setting output lower quality?

3) and what is the theory behind this problem what does it happens?

note: i tried with three different cables and the xbox tooo. It still happened. It seems to be fixed by disabling that option only.

3) maybe caused by a filter in tv side ?
Look at the tv settings and disable the image filters

Another option is a problem in the HDMI connector (tv or ps3 side)
Look with a magnifyer glass and a light to see if all pins are aligned ok and if there is some crap

Thumbs up

hey thx for tip same issue here, must say it's real cheap ass cable from shop 3 euros, on every console/hdmi inputs tv same white dots, setting this option from auto to OFF did the trick, i had a silvercrest(not bad) hdmi cable without any white dot issue, isn't it a cheap hdmi cable problem afterall?

Can be problem with display too, although on screens with that issue, I've seen it as green dots.

You have cracks in the BGA solder balls forming under the RSX circuit area.

White dots can be sign before you get YLOD.

On some machines only HDMI is effected, as that is another chip.

On others you an end up with a black or rainbow filled screen after a few minutes when running composite or a/v outputs.

Solution a re-balling or very proper reflow. -- The first is recommended.

nah, this cable i have does it on every console(new old) if u move the cable a bit u see stutter on the screen, using a av cable no black screens a fter minutes..no problems

i'm sure it's a cheap/crappy hdmi cable cuse a brand new ps3 and white dots can't be cracked solder balls and again they all have cracked balls if ur theory is correct, can't be true atleast not here..knock on wood..
