So what I've read online is I need to hack the PS3 basically. The system apparently got the RSOD from trying to upgrade to 4.20 the newest firmware out there. What are my options or is this console completely gone?

Try to reinstall the firmware from the Recovery Menu. Make sure u reinstall the same firmware or the one u had immediately before updating. Should solve the problem.

I've tried reinstalling 4.20 and it goes through the process but when it restarts, it goes to red screen.

Sorry. I am Asia where the highest is at 4.21. Does your system start and enters the XMB Menu? If yes, what version does it show in the system settings? Also, did u update via Internet or did u download a PUP file separately? Cos in the latter case, could be a corrupted download.

Then I am sorry to say but your console has been ***ked by a bad software update. U can try to swap the hard drive and see if it works but otherwise it's a shame. If it's still under warranty u could get a replacement though. Sorry again.

Yeah I have tried a different hard drive, still didn't work. I know there is a way to fix it, just confused on where to start with it. Factory Service Mode is what I need to get to get it working properly again.
