Nobody I've ever met used Linux for anything on PS3- just like nobody used it on Xbox 1. Its only popular use on Xbox 1 was for flashing the TSOP - and its only use on PS3 now is for doing hacking of the kind so that you can convert your box from CEX to DEX.

But for general use, it's pretty much useless - unless you want to get into SPU programming, but even then, it's a niche within a niche. Nobody uses this for end-user purposes because of the lack of hardware-accelerated drivers (same story as on Xbox 1). and low amount of RAM/slow CPU. Besides all that, it's just massively inconvenient to have a general-purpose OS on a games console vs. a PC/laptop - that's why no Linux OS will ever catch on - on any console.

If you don't think being able to play most of all newer games + backups on DEX is 'worth it', then I guess nothing will convince you - but then I have to wonder what all those people were whining about for over a year. You wanted your 'newer games' - you said how this was a 'gamesbox' and not a Linux box. Now you've got it and it's still 'meh, I don't see how it's worth it'? Be glad with what you got - this was never meant to be yours in the first place if it were left up to certain people.

I think you misunderstand me, I never bought my ps3 for games, piracy or legit, I bought it for the possibilities modding it could bring. So I guess you answered my question. Maybe I'll change my mind later, but for now, it doesn't really interest me.

I say resetting the syscon is the way to go, before attempting to convert a downgraded PS3 into DEX, or else, all DEX/CEX Firmwares needed on a downgraded PS3 will need to have LV1 checks disabled/patched.

I will do some testing and post a small tutorial with the DEX CFW (peek/poke) or Downgrader needed.

Before attempting to convert to DEX and to avoid Bricking the PS3 ,
Please reset the PS3 syscon hashes to eliminate the need of using CEX/DEX firmwares with Patched LV1 checks

To Reset the syscon and have the PS3 back to normal safer mode like any original ( non Downgraded ) PS3, here are the steps :

1- After completing the downgrade process and having Rogero CFW 3.x up and running, make sure you have the Blu-Ray drive attached or the QA Toggle package won't work.
2- Download the Rebug QA_Toggle package from here ---> toggle_qa.pkg
3- Put the "toggle_qa.pkg" on USB and Install it on the PS3.
4- Run the "Rebug Toggle QA" from XMB, the screen will go Black and you will see HDD Led activity then if all went fine you will hear one Beep and the PS3 will Restart back to XMB.
5- If you want to make sure QA flag was set, go to "Network Settings" then apply the following key combo (all at the same time):

L1 + L2 + L3 (press left stick) + R1 + R2 + dpad_down

You should see Edy Viewer, Debug Settings, and Install Package Files if done correctly.

6- Now that you have QA flag set, Turn Off your PS3 and Turn it back on but into "Recovery Menu"

This Step is very important, it have to be from "Recovery Menu" and not a normal Update from XMB or the PS3 will Brick.

Here is how to access it:
a. Turn off Playstation®3.
b. Hold The power button down; The system will turn on and turn off once again.
c. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
d. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
e. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via usb and then hit the PS button
f. The Recovery menu will pop up.

Alternatively you can simply use CondorStrike's Updater package to enter Recovery Menu directly from XMB without going through the boot sequences. --> Condor Updater v2.0

7- Now you must have any 3.55 OFW or CFW with original (non Patched) LV1 in your "USB:\PS3\UPDATE\PS3UPDAT.PUP", here's a link to 3.55-Kmeaw --> kmeaw355.PUP

8- Select the last option of the Recovery Menu --> System Update, then when prompted press and hold "Start+Select" for 5 seconds to start the update.

Once finished the PS3 will restart into XMB with the Syscon hashes reset back to 3.55 in both "ros0" and "ros1" and your PS3 is back like any original/non Downgraded PS3 that can use any CEX/DEX Fw without having to worry about disabling LV1 checks.

You can proceed now with converting from CEX to DEX by following Deank's tutorial normally.

- it can be used as a normal 3.55DEX FW during the CEX to DEX conversion.
- it can be used as a 3.55DEX CFW that can run Backups.
- it can be used for Downgrading back to 3.55DEX from 3.55+ DEX FW versions.

no more need to use 2 different 3.55-DEX PUPs.

Cheers

I updated my system to dex 4.20 I am now able to play my 3.6+ purchased games and still keep my home brew which is amazing but I was wondering if anyone else was able to get the blu ray player for movies to function under the dex firmware.

@ever yone

I am sorry I havent been back to comment or finish the revised tutorial that worked for me, but I bricked my PS3 60GB Fat HW BC. But I got a new one and here is how....

Had two X-Box 360 Slim RGH + 1 Xenon JTAG.
1. Sold the newer Slim to a friend from the scene for $275.
2. Took Money and went to Gamestop and bought a 60GB Fat.
3. Used Heat Gun to remove serial labels and replace on my bricked.
4. Returned Brick to Gamestop
5. Got a Slim PS3 with a Tradein of working PS3 FAT (They were doing double for console tradins so got $170 for tradein.) Total now $275+$170=$355
6. Bought Used 120GB Slim
7. Bought E3 Flasher + Two cheapo Games
8. Downgraded new Slim and Performed Dex
9. Put an Ad on craigslist Trade Xenon JTAG with 120gb hdd for Tablet.
10. Got a response for Acer Iconia A500 32gb Trade Straight up!
So in the end this is what I have now...
Code:
PS3 DEX Slim 1.3TB Internal 750TB External
X-Box 360 Slim RGH 1TB Internal HDD + 1TB External HDD
10" Acer Iconia 32GB Tablet Rooted on ICS
E3 Flasher Limited

And this is what I had when I started all this trading...

Code:
Bricked PS3 60GB Fat
2 x X-Box 360 Slim RGH
Xenon JTAG X-Box 360
Not a bad deal if you ask me, and I learned a hell of a lot! Bad thing is I went well over my 250gb download limit my ISP gives me.
