Servicing an old fat model
just today I bought my first ps3. it is the CECHC04 model and I found it for under 40 bucks, very nice, I'm very happy with it, but it didn't came without problems. Just from the first looks it needs a lot of repairs. I didn't get the power cord or the controller, and the hard drive is missing along with it's rack and the small hdd cover. I don't have these accessories yet, so I can't even see what firmware it is, hope it not anything over 3.55 as I want to convert it to DEX. Nonetheless my first concern is to fix the noise because it's really throttling all the time, which I know it indicates ylod, especially on this model (so I've been reading). I am planning to apply the mx-4 arctic compound, replace the thermal pads with newer, better ones and replace the fan with a 19 blade one. What would your advice be? Will that be enough for preventing ylod? Or should I do the reflux fix just to be safe? or is that too much/inefficient? Further, I have another question about the fan. I found one post online where people having this same model ( 60gb pal) and wanted to do the same thing and when they opened the console it already had the 19 blade fan. How is that possible when the CECHA models were the only fat models with this fan mounted by the manufacturer?

All 60gb ps3s with chrome and ps2 support come with 19 blade fans, although I wouldn't waste my time with a ylod ps3 all fixes last a short time as the ylod returns. The best solution is to buy a 60gb ps3 with a faulty blu ray drive and use the drive from the ylod ps3

It is a must that this PS3 gets service, strip it right down get everything out and clean the whole lot, use cotton buds and spend 2 hours cleaning it. Use Isopropyl alcohol and clean the mobo and the heatsink. New AS 5 paste applied.
If it has a loud fan then you need to remove the IHS and change the thermal paste below the IHS. This is not for the novice though. I buy and sell PS3's and its amazing just how bad some are, I bought one yesterday for just £30 which was listed as not reading games, when I got to the house to pick it up I thought oh my God I'm not even going in, those guys in the UK will know when I say Shameless what I mean. Any way got it to my home and I did not even take it in to my house it was that bad, I opened it up in my garden and then spent the next two hours cleaning every single part with alcohol and disinfectant. It was full of yellow goo and fluff in side. Smokers house and think peoples lungs are full of the same sh*t. Cleaned the lens and guess what I now have a full working ps3 for £30 it never needed a new lens it just needed cleaning. |

Thank's for your good advice's, I will still give it a clean and change the thermal paste as you said Keano, because you can notice from outside that there is quite a lot of dust inside, hope I won't find any failed chemistry experiments in there. I don't really know about the fan, now since I know now it's the 19 blade one I guess it doesn't need replacement and hopefully it will turn silent later. I was thinking that part of the noise also comes from those 15 blades. anyway the fan is controlled by the heat in the chips right? because it goes on full speed in just 5 minutes after powering the system on, is it that the chips get so hot that fast? I was testing it, kept it for several hours in XMB but no ylod until now.

It is not good because the solder joints are getting hot and could crack leading to YLOD or BSOD. Now don't panic the fans running at super speed are doing there jobs in keep the CPU/GPU cool. It could well be that it works for years like this but if it does fail with YLOD/BSOD you know why. Try and find someone who could repair it for you should not cost too much to have the IHS removed and new paste applied. |
