True but those open hotspots are provided by companies. And as we all know, companies are ruled over one set of laws, and individuals another. Though I am surprised some internet cafes havent been fined, though they may have installed better firewalls.

laws are most likely different in the US than in the UK but the companies here must comply by the same laws as the rest of us. you can in many cases get a case dismissed on the slightest technicality.
using the "unsecured" wifi excuse is working for O2 customers in the uk who are getting sued for huge amounts of money from ben dover productions

And perhaps most crucially the letters cannot hold the bill payer liable if someone else used their internet connection to download illegal material

the citizens advice is a wonderful service

also good news for those in NY

IP addresses alone not enough to lay blame on an individual (piracy related but same principle)

Remember that on the Amiga we ran good homebrew on 0.5 MB and fanciest of homebrew on 1 or 2 MB

A common mistake is comparing computer RAM to console RAM. They work completely different. Consoles dont need near the amount of ram that a computer does and its different architecure all together

I really think having open Wifi will become illegal in a couple of years. And to use a computer on an internet coffee will require your ID. This is the direction where the US is going. They want to control everything that goes over the internet. Although the internet is not theirs.

Take the Megaupload case for example. The FBI shut it down because there where some illegal material from a US citizen/artist/whatever. Ok, but why do the rest of the world has to suffer that shut down because US feels like it. I mean, they really think internet is only for US. Right? Because I can't find another explanation. This could easily trigger a new war.
