I'm pretty sure the BD firmware on the drive is 100% in charge of playing BDMV, so unless you want to do some firmware hacking, I don't think you'd be able to accomplish native BDMV playback on DEX with homebrew alone. I could be completely wrong about this, but it seems that hacking the CEX files into the DEX FW would be the best way to go on this. And there's probably flags set in syscon as well. Once again, you'd be stuck on 3.55 CFW. It would be nice if there was some magic setting somewhere that enabled playback, but there isn't.

Would be interesting to get them playing in DEX, but tbh I really don't care that I can't play BD movies, I have a standalone BD player,

@JonahUK

I'm just saying that, we backup our games so we don't have to use discs.

Why not just backup our movies, so we don't have to use discs?

Pretty sure the drive isn't responsible for playback otherwise there would be no files included in the CEX firmware either.

Looking at the wiki, these seem to be the most obvious files needed:

Code:
+-- dev_flash
¦ +-- bdplayer
¦ ¦ +-- AacsModule.spu.isoself
¦ ¦ +-- bdj.self
¦ ¦ +-- bdjstack
¦ ¦ ¦ +-- bdjstack.jar
¦ ¦ ¦ +-- classes.zip
¦ ¦ ¦ +-- font.properties
¦ ¦ ¦ +-- java.security
¦ ¦ ¦ +-- pbpcell.properties
¦ ¦ ¦ +-- pbpuiformhp.jar
¦ ¦ ¦ +-- SCE-PS3-RD-R-LATIN.TTF
¦ ¦ +-- bdp_BDMV.self
¦ ¦ +-- bdp_BDVD.self
¦ ¦ +-- CprmModule.spu.isoself
¦ ¦ +-- CssModule.spu.isoself
¦ ¦ +-- gpu.sprx
¦ ¦ +-- SYS
¦ ¦ +-- CapFont_MARU.cbf.LZRC
¦ ¦ +-- CapSound.pcm.LZRC
¦ +-- vsh
¦ +-- module
¦ ¦ +-- bdp_disccheck_plugin.sprx
¦ ¦ +-- bdp_plugin.sprx
¦ ¦ +-- bdp_storage_plugin.sprx
¦ +-- resource
¦ +-- bdp_disccheck_plugin.rco
¦ +-- bdp_plugin.rco
¦ +-- bdp_storage_plugin.rco
¦ +-- explore
¦ ¦ +-- xmb
¦ ¦ +-- category_video_bdponly.xml
I haven't checked which files are missing from DEX yet but I know the dev_flash/bdplayer folder is definitely missing.

Because that folder is missing, it's pretty much a given that the other files are missing as well.

As there are files listed under VSH, it's pretty obvious that vsh.self has to be patched.

Due to the VSH patching, this is something that cannot be easily achieved without some RE of a retail vsh to see the differences (way out of my scope!).

The only achievable way that I can see for getting playback on DEX is via homebrew using the libraries stated earlier.

There are alternatives for playback as stated and I use most of them and I also knew about the loss of playback when I converted but I just started to wonder why was it not included and what are the issues enabling it.

If you manage to spur BD playback on DEX to be fixed, it will be the ultimate choice. It's about the only reason I stuck to CEX.

To be honest mate, I haven't got the faintest idea!!!!

I'll continue to look into it on the off chance that something might happen or perhaps the Showtime dev (Andoma?) could add playback to his app (that would be perfect!).

Totally off-topic but WELL DONE DUPLEX!

Not 1 retail blu-ray movie disc can be played on a DEX (Debug console).

Read the thread you are posting in. And maybe it will make more sense.

I know DEX can't read bluray movies (although there was a fix a while back as I remember), but I was refering to the following:

I thought I remembered the same thing, but could not find a link to substantiate my claims...

As far as I am aware, there has never been a fix for playback on DEX.

My main ps3 is on OFW so I don't have the issue regarding AACS but from reading other forums as well as here:

The Zookeeper, Bad Teacher, Moneyball, Smurfs 3D, Sherlock Holmes 2 and Columbiana have all been mentioned about prompting to update (you can spoof but apparantly it doesn't work for all discs)

Also, it's well known that AACS keys are renewed every 18 months or so. If you can't update your keys, you get no playback.
