As in putting one console's hdd into another console? Yes, you can and it will work just fine. Microsoft designed it to work, so when you go to a friends place, etc. you can put your HDD on their console and play, etc.

Chances are it's just the laser.. What error are you getting? Open tray/dirty disk? It would be much easier and cheaper to just replace the laser if that's the case.

Good to see another local on here!

Best/Most Trouble free method is to replace the laser as replacing the drive may end up costing you more as the key will be needed from the faulty drive to be transferred to the newer drive , and this may require additional equipment and take longer. This is because each motherboard is paired to the drive board, the same applies to ps3. Look up "pot tweaking" or "pot fix", Great free way to fix disc issues provided your laser isn't 100% dead. Also new lasers cost £5 -Look on Ebay. Lastly There are various types of lasers/Drives so check before you attempt to replace anything.

Goodluck
