PS3 IHS Lapping

Hi. I reflowed my ps3 but the fan goes on high within a couple of minutes. I have heard that this is because of dry thermal paste underneath the ihs and so I would like to replace it. The ihs is also concave down so it only makes contact at the corners. I would like to lap the ihs but have no lapping experience and the PDF reflow guide I read by nitchibotsu doesn't provide step by step instructions. If you have done this 1) how did you do it ?(what sandpaper, up down or circle motion, when to move up sandpaper grit, etc) and 2) what where your results? Pictures would help. Thank you and please don't flame me for trying to fix it DIY style.

I've always used a figure 8 pattern while lapping heatsinks and cpus, if you look around there lapping kits out there that make the process easier, come with all needed sandpaper and a piece of glass for a flat surface. Not needed to buy one, but as I said would make the process smoother unless you have a piece of glass.

here's a good guide on lapping: http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=433

Thank you. I have a mirror that I am planning to use. I have read other tutorials and they all finish the ihs with 2000+ grit sandpaper but this one only went up to 1000. Would you recommend I progress to 2000+ sandpaper or will 1000 grit be good enough?

It all depends on how pretty you want it to look, I usually go to 1500.

Also replace your thermal pads on various chips around the PS3 mobo, that may also be causing overheating (in my case anyways).
