Hi there,

I got my hands on a ps3 slim that wont read games. The previous owner told me he swapped the dvd drive and connected the PCB from his old drive on the new one. But it still aint working.

I got it for free and i would like to bring this baby back to life.
When i power the ps3 i can see the laser moving backwards going up and down and the red laser turns on.

After that nothing happens.

What would be the first logic steps to check what the problem is on this one? Can the problem be somewhere else than the drive or did the previous owner something wrong?

does it read a cd/dvd at all?
if you dont see any blue laser working then that may be the fault

no blue laser, besides when i try now i dont see the red laser pop on as well.

But how can i check if the correct logic board is mounted? does the drive do anything at all when when the wrong logic board is assembled?

I would say faulty laser. I did one last week, no blue laser, looked dead, replaced the laser, worked fine. if its a kes-450 then they don't cost a great deal anyway.

if a demo / hdd installed game works then the logic board is paired fine

Thanks for that i will try it,
il also suspect that there is a part missing in the 'slot drive loader' i'll take a picture, maybe you guys see something about that,

btw a second ps3 has a drive that is not spinning up, also no blue just the red laser goes on for a second. Also replace the laser here?

When my laser went dead in my fat the drive simply made a couple of small noises as it tried to read a disc and wouldn't spin up.

Again, check for logic board failure using a demo/installed game

all ps3 consoles do have a habit of loosing bluray playback ,,it is a weak point,
red laser glow is for dvd,,blue laser glow is for bluray ,,it does sound like the laser has gone ,,,you have to be very careful on which one you buy
the kes/m 450a series will work on most slims ..the kes/m 450daa will only work in later plug and play drives but will not work in bd board type drives ,,been caught with that,,the best way to tell is by the colour of the board on the laser ,,the aaa is green in colour and the daa and later is a blueygreenish colour,,as for the other console not spinning up ,,the laser is more than likely gone to ,,,when a disc is inserted all info from disc is sent down to recognise it then back upto the drive to start spinning ,,if laser is dud then no info is transferred so it will not start to spin,,,
so if you are to buy a new laser just be careful on which one you buy,,even new ones can be faulty,,i do repairs on slims as a hobby and have a success rate with new lasers at about 85%,,lucky they are not to dear to buy,,shop around for a price ,,you will be surprised at the difference in cost,,,hope it helps you out,,, also is your disc icon spinning ,,if not then bd board is a non match,,,the icon will spin even if laser is a dud

Well the laser for the fat drive is deliverd. After this one i get my eyes on the slim drive,
