3Key and what we know so far

With all of the hype about this new ODDE and the confusion surrounding the device, I figured it would be good to start a thread to discuss what we do know so far. Please do not use this as a discussion about the device since we already have a few threads open fr discussion. Keep this thread specifically for known facts.

So what do we know so far
1.) This is not an xbox 360 device and should stop being compared to the xbox 360 version of the ODDE.

2.)This device will allow you to play PS3 game backups from a USB hard drive. USB 2.0 is supported. USB 3.0 is not supported because as many people know the PS3 does not have USB 3.0 capability. According to the team behind the device PS1 and PS2 backups are also playable (Considering you have a backwards compatible unit)

3.) As far as we know game rips will be direct 1:1 rips and not in the same format as ps3 game backups that many of us got used to with our MFW boxes.

4.) At the time of writing 3.55 is required to obtain your BD drive key. There is no guarantee that this will change or be required once the device actually comes out.

5.) The device sits between the drive and the motherboard (like other ODDE devices that you may be familiar with.) Since the device uses the PS3s proprietary ribbon cable, interfacing to a PC does not seem possible (or at least an easy task) at this time.

6.) The device is scheduled for release on 12-12-2012. There may be variations in release date, and being the PS3 scene release may also never see the light of day as many other PS3 releases have also failed to do.

7.) The team released a PoC video on 10.13.2012 that doesn't really prove anything to most of us. In the video there is no way to tell if Borderlands is running from hard drive or from disc. You can almost see the BD drive sitting behind the PS3 so another fact is they provided one really sketchy video which does not prove the validity of the device. How do any of us really know that the blue circuit board isnt just a passthrough or extender? Shady videos are never good, especially if a company is trying to build hype and momentum to push sales upon release. Even showing the HDD in use with a blinking indicator showing something is being read would be more convincing than that video was.

Please feel free to add to this thread, but please make sure what you are posting is fact. I will try to keep this post as updated as possible.

As per point 4 I would like to bring your attention to a little IRC chat that I saw this morning (10.13.2012) Normally I do not post IRC logs, but I don't see how this is hurting anything. It is a quick explanation of why this may not work with any console that cannot be downgraded, and it may also mean 3.55 will always be required for getting the drive key.

<BobbyBlunt> may I ask why though?
<naehrwert> because it works like this: you have eid2 and eid4
<naehrwert> eid4 can be generated in an unknown way from eid2
<naehrwert> eid4 is used by sv_iso
<naehrwert> eid2 is sent to the drive initially to pair it per console
<naehrwert> so for the initial comm. between the drive two keys are used stored in eid4 (that encrypt all the comm.), then a session key is exchanged
<naehrwert> so it's useless to sniff the initial comm. that auths the drive because it's encrypted using a per console key
<naehrwert> and you can't get that key if you don't have your eid_root_key
<naehrwert> and well that's only possible on d/g consoles
<naehrwert> end of story

So if you have a 3000 model or a new 4000 "Super Slim" model then this device may not ever work for you according to the above log. Nice for someone to give a straight intelligent answer when asked about something PS3 related, and I thank you for that

If someone makes a 4.xx firmware, I see almost all subsequent firmwares getting owned and this device being completely worthless to anyone

i really don't see this having a market...
i mean those of us in 355 are the only ones that can use it

and as @naehrwert said this key is present in the eid, and you need the root key so unless someone finds a working kernel exploit to peek&poke stuff this is not usefull for the 3k/4k crowd

Of course this will enable you to play the latest "backup" without fixes and go online... but just the thought of abandoning 355 kind of gives me the creeps..

And sony would probably fix it... (remember the old talk about "hey we pwned the metldr haha sony .|."
what happened next? metldr.2) can you imagine being stuck in 4.x? nah i like being stuck in 355

And lets face it... the 355 crowd is shrinking so i don't see this device being that successfull
(unless the crackers disapear and go make 1:1 copies instead...)

@hellsing9 The only issue I have with your theory is that the 360 xkey also either had blank images or rendered images in the beginning, and not the actual finished product. Just because there is no picture available does not mean it does not exist. I believe the device is very much real, but if it actually makes it to consumers and is useful well that is a different story

Edit: Now we are getting into that territory of discussion and not a prerelease facts thread. If it turns out to be fake I will bug you or another mod to close it, but I would like to stick to posting just facts if we could. My fault as well as anyone Else's because just by making this post I am guilty of it as well.
