OK, so ive searched these forums and have around 10hrs of google time into this, and i cant seem to find a solution
I have a 40gb fat ps3 that i got for free because it didnt have a bluray drive. and i thought since i couldnt play games i might as well try and jailbreak it. but in the process you can guess what happened. i got stuck in an update loop and for some reason i cant get into recovery mode to use that updater i have dbd update, and have tried putting that into the right usb port, but it just keeps going to the updater as soon as it turns on i have tried formatting the hard drive (ntfs primary) tried taking out the hard drive during the update, and nothing happens, the update will reach 99% or finish not sure, then it goes to the error not sure what else i can do if anything. Im just getting extremely frustrated and just want a working PS3 ![]() i will try anything thanks (ps these are my steps in trying to get to the recovery screen) ps3 is off (switch off in back) turn switch on hold power button(beeps once when turning on, beeps again a couple seconds later, then beeps to turn off a couple seconds after that second try hold power button (beeps once when turning on, beeps again a couple seconds later, then beeps twice and i release ps3 goes to update loop again |

Its cause you don't have a blu ray. You will need to get one then you will also need to get a factory service mode dongle so you can enter FSM to remarry the bluray drive to the PS3. Ask
@Bigbones87
if he has any spare PS3 parts he would be willing to sell to you if you are in the USA.

I have a few blue ray drives, but you will still need a fsm dongle. You don't really need a blue ray drive to get it out of the update loop, because you can use a fsm dongle to get into fsm, then use the downgrade lvl2diag to install a mfw of the lowest firmware you can install with no bd checks. The reason you want the lowest possible firmware is because you can't update in fsm. Only install the same or lower firmware, and since you dont know what firmware you are on, you will want to make a mfw of the lowest firmware you can. Also, I'm assuming you are on a firmware lower than 3.56, otherwise don't try in get into fsm. Never can tell these days. This will get you out of the update loop, but you are going to at leat need a bd drive eventually or you won't be able to run any .pkgs or anything.
************* [ - Post Merged - ] ************* @JustThatDude hey for some reason whenever you quote me or @ me it doesn't ever notify me? Only for you though. Everyone else it does. I just stumble upon threads where you quoted me or mentioned me and I'm like..."what the hell?" . Wierd right?

You would have to remarry a drive. You are in an update loop because it is trying to complete the update you asked it to, but it fails because there is no bd drive. A fsm dongle is like $10 to $15 plus shipping depending on which on you get. I use the e3 card reader and it is $15. There are cheaper ones that work aswell. You would have to get the dongle, put the special file onto it to make it fsm dongle, then you would stick it in the drive and you would hit power, the eject immediately. It would shut the console oFf, thn you would put the lvl2diag and the mfw pup you make onto a USB and put it in the right USB port and turn the ps3 on. Once it was done, you would put the step2 lvl2diag to exit fsm, and the voila. Then you could remarry a drive to it.
