i did the upside down thing with my ps3, and.....
it didnt really do anything, didnt get a big fan blast, and when i turned it back on everything had gone screwy, all my files had lost any info i had added to them and were just displaying there original fine names, so i had to sort it all out again, not a big deal but it was a pain in the ass when u got a few hundread mp3s and 20 or so movies on it!

thats just my view, i wont be doing it again!

Theres no way this will damage your PS3, Because fans are designed to run for hundreds of thousands of hours. Just think of it like you PC cpu fan. If you leave your pc always on (which I do) the cpu and all the case fans on on 24/7.
With the PS3, its just a quick clean, If sony created this mode, then its definatly not gonna do anything bad to your system.
My bet is that it's a thing that they do if you send it in for repair, they do their thing and do a fan clean/test.

this is dangerous for your ps3 no matter what model, cause it purposely causes the ps3 to overheat, there wasnt a feature built in to the ps3 to run a fan test, the Only resean the ps3 behaves like this, is because its overheating and if it is done to often will melt the core, which obviously cant be fixed without a mobo change, that is why sony are saying not to do it,

Just my 2 cents,
How on earth does this cause your ps3 to overheat!?
Everything in the PS3 is off when you do this, Even if the cpu is one, the fans are going thus cooling it down...

The PS3 fantest ONLY is present in the 40GIG PS3s!!!
There is NO Fantest for the 60 gig!!!! <---- This "Fan test" does this (Click)

i have to say when i posted the video on the 40 gig fan test, people where telling me its bad for the ps3..

WRONG. when your ps3 is off for a long time your chip is not hot, all the fan does is go faster nothing wrong with that at all, but doing it on any other model of ps3 using the flip upside down method is plan STUPID, i would never encourage someone to do that at all

if this was not meant to be a sony addition to the ps3, then why have they not stooped the fan test on 40 gig model by now, they could have stoped it with a FW update but no, so if sony says its not good for your system they are liers cause it still works im only talking bout 40 gig users ^^ and trying to tell someone it breaks your warentee is BS,

i am not taking off warentee, i am not damaging my ps3, or nothing oi i hate this subject always gets me going

There is no way this could damage your ps3

your PS3 mobo can withstand heats from 300 - 500 degrees F so it is unlikely this would damage it the only thing that this might do it cause it to overheat enough to bridge solder connections or create a break in a connection which could cause various video/power issues in the ps3. but seeing how your only letting it over heat for a very short period of time this is very unlikely plus this is preventative maintenance to insure that your ps3 doesn't overheat for long period of time causing those bridges or breaks.

don't flip your ps3 upside down it isn't made to circulate with weight on it in that direction the mobo and fan are very heavy and screwing with the circulation can damage your ps3 easily also the weight can cause thing to touch that shouldn't and cause a short which can even be irreparable without replacing the mobo.

Why not stick the vaccum cleaner near the vents?

I've never done a test like this.
I've a launch date 60gb and it's 100% fine here (other than a burnt blu-ray that I've replaced after 8 months).

What I do is to use a vacuum cleaner on the vents just like I do with every other electronic I have/had in the past 20 years (specially TVs)..

I do think it is potentially dangerous to do the "FAN TEST" on any PS3 for that matter.

It doesn't matter, cold air is denser than hot air so it would go down (outside the PS3 when it's upside down) and the hot air would rise up. There are no vents on the HDD side, so hot air will be trapped inside the PS3 and the fans will start to cool it. I bet that if this is done for more than 10-15 minutes, the PS3 will die. Best way to remove dust is to open up the PS3 and clean it yourself OR use a can of compressed air. I prefer the former.

I always do the fan test to clean my ps3 every month probably, its a quite stealthy machine making probably 10times less noise than my computer so the fan test hasnt really harmed my ps3
