As already said, it's down to cost. Believe it or not 6 years ago RAM was more expensive than it is now (shock!).
To the person saying RAM isn't cheap at the moment, you're bonkers, you can get 16GB of 2000Mhz DDR3 for £60. That would have cost more than three times the price even 2 years ago. Even low speed RAM has more than halved in price in those 2 years. RAM prices do fluctuate and there was a time a few years ago when RAM was more expensive than it was 18 months before. Which again highlights the problem, in a volatile market imagine if they were to allow X GB for the RAM and then the price goes up massively, on a mass market item...That could be a disaster. |

Believe when they took out the quarter window in vehicles the savings was something under 20 cents per unit. Never underestimate a company looking to save a little

yea but they would charge the consumer for that. its not as if they are giving anything for free plus if you want to sell your console as this really powerful thing i think its a poor choice to skimp on ram.

Your reasoning is severely flawed. But it actually fuels the opposite argument you are trying to prove, if only to a minor degree. 2nd hand consoles are something the manufacturer doesn't want to be sold because they want to sell new ones ![]() No, they are not giving anything away "for free". But there's more Fiestas on the road than Porches, strangely enough, think for a few minutes and it will make sense ![]() Then remember how much the PS3 cost at launch and how many units it sold at that price ![]() Then there's the argument of volatile pricing, as RAM can actually go up in price depending on supply and demand over long periods of time. Electronic goods increasing in price Vs Time, is something that has very rarely occured in history, and never been met with positive results except for items of extreme commodity, not games consoles. We're talking items that were launched at a price to test the market and then increased as a result of demand. In those situations, the price charged is based on demand, this wouldn't be an "option" with increasing RAM as the increased cost would be fixed if the wholesale price of RAM increased. There was a similar pf sorts situation with the Xbox 1 where the Microsoft paid over the odds for nvidia graphics chips, where over time nvidia managed to reduce the cost of production, but Microsoft was still paying full price for the graphics chip. Many see this as the reason they went with ATI\AMD for the Xbox 360 due to bad blood between the two companies. It's bad for business to be depending on outside factors that are beyond your control. It's those kind of reasons, like it or lump it

Um... the wii-u's graphics chip is 5x as powerful as the PS3s... and the PS3 dev kit came with 1gb. The PS3 has 256mb. So The PS4 will either have 2 (same as wii-U, or 4. meaning big whoop.) You'll be mighty pissed when you get a console that isn't much of a step up from the current lot, never mind the competition. Look at the state of PC gaming for a clue. |
