BD-Drive died without warning. More Info inside.
Hi Guys,
yesterday, as said, without any warning, my BD-Drive seems to have died. I have a CECHC04 60GB PHAT PS3 and i'm on 4.30 Rogero v2. As was playing Games before yesterday without problems and never had any problems with Discs on the PS3. Never a warning or something else. Yesterday i started up the PS3 and didn't have a "Game Icon/Disk Icon" under the Home-Tab in XMB. After reading here and googling around, it just could be that the Drive has broken. So i disassembled the PS3/Drive. So, what's working? Inserting and Ejecting Discs works just fine. Also the PS3 powers up when in Stand-By-Mode when inserting a Disc. After disassembling and inserting a Disc i noticed that the Disc won't spin up, but i'm sure the Motor tries to. I made a little Video of the Problem: http://videobam.com/AiALo One can hear the "clicky" sound when inserting the Disc the second time (sorry for the sniffing sound, i'm currently sick at home ;-) ) but no spinning :-( Questions is? Is it only the Laser that is broken or do i need a new drive? Which Drive or Laser do i need, i haven't seen any label that says "KEM400AAA" or something like that, do all CECHC04 have the same Drive/Laser? Maybe someone knows a good Dealer around Germany/Munich?? Should i try to remove the "Black Cover with white swinging Arms" on top of the Drive to see if the Laser has some Light? I hope someone has some answers for me, if you need more Info, just say so, i love my PS3 and i don't want it to die ;-) Thanks in Advance, StoneCraX Last edited by StoneCraX; 11-22-2012 at 07:29 AM. Reason: changed the "P" to "B" in XMB :-) |

KES-400A laser I believe you require, It would be ok if someone came in to tell me otherwise though.
I personally would replace the laser, before the BD Drive, the symptoms sound more like the laser lens is dead (to me). The KEM400AAA is the Deck model. Last edited by HulkWogan; 11-22-2012 at 08:02 AM. |

Mmmmm if the drive is *dead* not much to do...listening to the video you uploaded that not good for me.
@StoneCraX
I don't know any good delaer on Germany/Munich. Best bet is to change the drive...risk to *play* with the laser..etc kinda useless. What's the serial of your mobo?.

Hi Guys,
thanks for your Answers. Well, Homebrew runs fine, and also all games that doesnt need a Disc in the Drive runs fine. Also Streaming Movies with PSM works fine, and anything else. Just the Disc won't spin. Is it the Laser that doesn't find the Disc or is it the Motor of the Drive, that's the Question? :-) @hellsing9 Sorry for the Dumb question, but where to find the Serial for the Mobo? thanks StoneCraX |

I don't know if a broken laser would prevent the initial spin. could be drive motor, logic board, laser.... may be better of replacing the whole drive. First i would double check all the ribbon connections a pray that it was something small. Good luck

Try taking the drive out from the ps3 an dissmantle further, try to remove the motor and use a oil based lubricant spray such as WD40 on the motor and any moving parts such as the slide hinges. Also try to work out if the motor is a direct drive or a brushed one as sometimes the coil wound magnets inside can get blackend an loose contact, your drive sounds like its trying to engage so my diaognosis is your drive is most likely dirty and needs a good clean and a loob..Try this before you do anything drastic like replace it.

If you can run homebrew and games discless it's definately not the logic board. Sounds like it's only a laser gone bad.

Hi Guys,
one more Video. Just noticed right now, before to start dismantle the drive, that the "white circular magnet holder" can just be removed. I made another little Video, showing the the Laser tries to get to the Disc for three times than stops. I read somewhere that if the Laser is broken, there won't be a signal for the Motor to spin. Is this another hint to find the faulty part? For me it looks like it is the Laser. What i heard before (in the other Video) was the Laser that wants to go to the Disc, but i couldn't see it before, because of the white magnetic holder. I used a burned Audio CD right now, but it is the Same for every CD I put in, PS3, PS2, PSX, DVD, i don't have a Blue-Ray lying around so i cant test with that Video: http://videobam.com/lwXPZ TIA StoneCraX |
