I had my ps3 running 3.55 Kmeaw for the longest time. I also had rebug 3.56 spoofer install, though I don't think I needed it at all(I installed it early on when I was not sure what it was for, thought I needed it I guess).

After a while, since there was no newer CFW in sight, and dongles were the only way to play the lasted backups, I got a true blue dongle.

I tried to install the True Blue dongle CFW, but it was complaining about my firmware, saying it was newer, and therefore would not install. My firmware displayed as 3.56

I tried to remove the rebug 3.56 spoof, but was not able to. So, I figured that since 3.55 was the highest OFW I had ever had on this PS3, if I did a system restore it should install OFW 3.55. Well after the system restore my PS3 firmware still displayed as 3.56, which I thought was strange because I had never install 5.56 OFW. I guess I was just mistaken on how system restore works.

So after the restore I assumed I was now on OFW 3.56, and was just screwed as far as CFW goes. At least without buying a flasher and figuring that whole thing out.

After the latest breakthroughs with CFW, I figured I would take another crack at my ps3.

I installed a few package files, rebug 3.56 spoof to try and remove it again, and multiman. Then I thought, "Wait, I thought you could only install this custom software on a jail broken or CFW ps3, and I am on OFW 3.56 I thought?"

Well sure enough, I am able to install homebrew, and play my backups after the restore, with firmware displaying as 3.56

So, question time.

Does this mean I actually restored back to 3.55 Kmeaw, with 3.56 spoof still active?

And what would this mean for upgrading to the lastest CFW?

Could I just follow a tutorial as if my CFW is actually 3.55 (cuz it is right? There was never a 3.56 CFW as far as I know, and I have to be on CFW to play my backups)

Is there any risk in attempting to update to the latest CFW given my circumstance?

To get rid of your spoof, enter the recovery menu, or use condor updater, and install OFW 3.55.

I have tried to remove the spoof, but have not been able to. I searched around for the original rebug 3.56 spoof files, but could not find it as it is so old now, all the download links are dead.

The spoof is my whole problem. I can't get rid of it, and I am not sure it is safe to upgrade CFW with it.

Did you read my reply? I just told you how to get rid of the spoof.

Use Condor Updater. And install OFW 3.55.

If that does not remove your spoof, then I have a theory on what the problem is.

Open multiMAN and go to system info. That will tell you what firmware # you are on.

Ok, Condor Updater was not able to do anything, just says it failed and the system needs to restart.

Multiman shows:

Firmware 3.55 [SC-8 | Hermes]

The PS3 menu system information is where it says 3.56

Ok.

With the ps3 off, with the red standby light, hold the power button. Keep holding it while the ps3 will turn on and then off after a bit.
Then it will be off with the red standby light on. Hold the power button again, hold it until you hear the double beep. It will go beep, then beep, beep. Then let go.

The screen will then say Please Connect Controller and Press the PS button. Do that, and you will be in the recovery menu.
Choose option 6. System Update. Install OFW 3.55 from there. The PS3UPDAT.PUP should be inside a folder named UPDATE, and that folder should be inside a folder named PS3, and that folder should be on the root of a fat32 formatted usb flash drive.

That will get rid of your spoof.

Don't use Kmeaw. Use OFW 3.55. I gave you a link to it in one of my last posts.

After you install OFW 3.55, Then install Kmeaw.
Install and run toggle.qa.pkg, Go to network settings and press R1,R2,L1,L2,L3, and down on the d-pad, all at the same time. Then more options will appear under network settings. Don't change any of the settings there. It is only to be sure that Qa Flag was toggled on.
Then you will be ready to install whatever new CFW you choose.
