HDMI Issue driving me crazy... I think I tried everything
So I think I have a tough one.
My system is the following. PS3, AV 5:1 receiver (SONY) with hdmi inputs/output and HD ready TV (LG 720/1080i) TV PS3 is connected to the AV Receiver through HDMI, AV receiver outputs the signal to the TV through HDMI. This setup used to work great in the past. I should mention here that i used to take my PS3 to a friends house often but never had problems connecting it back to my system..... well...until now. Problem is the following: When i power up my PS3, TV understands that something gets connected ("No Signal" warning goes away) and it just stays there....I get just a blank screen. Only thing that happens is a repetitive change on TVs black variation like something is trying to connect....loosing signal and tries back on. I m not sure i m describing it well but English is not my native language, so sorry for that. So this is where all the troubleshooting starts.... Things I 've tried:
Having done all that i ruled out the following:
Only thing left was that PS3 hdmi output was somehow causing the problem. So I took my PS3, plugged it on my HDMI PC monitor and powered it up. First try was unsuccessful so I tried to hold the start button to reset once more the display settings on my PS3 and BOOM flawless HDMI output on 1080p. I think I cried a little bit when I saw that HDMI port was actually working, so once I unchecked the 1080p output on display settings (as my TV doesn't support that), I unplugged PS3 from my PC monitor and plugged it back to my TV to see that I still had the exact same problem. Knowing that my standard setup used to work just fine while all my devices PS3, AV Receiver, TV don't seem to have any problem, gets me a bit frustrated and I feel like being at a dead end. I posted my problem also on PS3 forum but still no useful feedback... Any help will be much appreciated Looking forward for your comments Thank you in advance Regards G |

I know it sounds daft but try swapping the HDMI cable round.
I had this with an old cable that would only work if I used one particular end in the TV and the other in the PS3. Try the lowest available setting on the ps3 (480p/576p?) and disable audio over hdmi to see if that works. Other than that, reset the Video settings on the PS3: 1. Turn off the PS3 2. Press and hold the power button on the front until you hear the second beep (about five seconds) This should force the PS3 to detect the HDMI conenction. |

I notice you only have one hdmi port on your tv, and have tried a few different hdmi cables.
Have you actually tried to connect another hdmi device to you tv to see if it is the port on the tv? |

I understand you have an av receiver and they are all connected to that but have you tried connecting your ps3 to your tv directly via hdmi? that would then tell you if it is your av receiver

The PS3 output also have copy protection activated (HDCP), preventing DVRs from recording gameplay (bloody bizarre in my opinion, understandable for movies - but pointless for games). So its not completely the same output configuration as your other devices - this might be something to factor in. Check your TV with any other device output with HDCP. Assuming you tried with different cables and same result, its the TV firmware or port that needs to be looked at.

@smartymarty07
That was one of the first things I tried.... Didnt work @mrBear Unfortunately i dont have other HDCP devices. I read something about it in some other forum but how is it possible to have a fully working setup running and suddenly stop working because of the HDCP thing? Thank you both G |

There are a few possibilities.
1. The cable might have a little connection broken that is just enough to throw it out of whack with the TV. But since you tried several cables I dont think this is it. 2. The TV had a firmware update (My internet connected TV updates now and then) 3. The actual port on the TV got a small dry solder joint that got lose or cracked with heating up and cooling down cycles (very likely) I dont think its your PS3, since it worked on another TV set. Nor do I think its the AV receiver, since you connected the PS3 directly to the TV with the same result. If the TV is under warranty you might want to have it tested. |
