Upgrade PS3 on 4.21 REBUG?

I wanted to upgrade my ps3 hard drive and I am on REBUG 4.21. When I put the new hard drive in it says to put in a flash drive that has the 4.21 update on it, so it can format it. What do I do. Do I put the REBUG 4.21 on a flash drive and then flash?

I think you have to downgrade to 3.55 OFW before upgrading the HDD. I'm considering upgrading my own soon

And what do we do if we can't downgrade first? As in the case when the HDD suddenly fails? Will we be SoL then?

Yeah poss. You DO need to downgrade to 3.55 first I'm afraid.

IIRC, Rogero made a change in one of the last revisions of his firmware, so the harddisk could be changed, without the need to downgrade first.
Check out the revisions for his 4.31 firmware, and see if you can find it. I don't have the time (nor should I do it for you ), but it might be the case, if its of any relevance to you.

Also, IF your ps3 hdd was to brick, I would assume you could insert a flashstick with 4.21 OFW, and it would work. Afterwards, you'd just have to flash/downgrade it, so you shouldn't have any big worries, if your PS3 would brick, if the HDD died.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't installing 4.21OFW is an absolute no-no for CFW, especially for those without a flasher?

Although I don't think team Rebug will release some kind of CFW that "only works until your HDD die, will nullify any chance of installing CFW on new HDD". :D
