Can Somebody Please Help Me Make a Decision?

I am thinking of saving my money up so that I can buy Civilization V on Steam as an early Christmas present for myself. I love the idea of building an empire and playing through time from past to present. Now, I know that is a RTS, right? Okay, so is it going to be a game that I can turn on, do about ten minutes of reading and then I'm in the game having a blast or is it a game that requires you to be a strategical mastermind to enjoy?

LOL!

Well I am not trying to master it. I am not a sore loser, either. When it comes to games, I am pretty patient. I just want to simply be able to enjoy myself without having to turn to GameFAQs or Wikipedia every ten seconds.

I watched a bit of an LP beforehand, but really it doesn't seem all that hard to get into. I played the everliving crap out of it, honestly. If you've no idea wtf you're doing (like me), you can get kinda rolled, yeah..But if you've an inkling of how rts works and such, you'll be fine. There's also workshop mods that let you edit your units and stuff if you're purely in it for the exploration/walk through time. I hear a lot of complaints that civ 4 was better, but i wouldn't know..If you do pick up C5, gods and kings is worth it -if- you can get it dirt cheap. Paying 30, 20, even 10$ for that damn 'expansion' is criminal in my eyes. It balances out a lot, and fixes a lot of bugs (kinda..annoying that they force you to buy something to fix their game..) , but it doesn't fix anything insane. It also has multiplayer (derp) that's okay, it has a bit of bugs (at least vanilla) though so make sure you save oft.

Thanks @LilPimpT !

I watched an hour and a half video on YouTube explaining the basics and then played the free demo on Steam. I love this game! I just purchased it on Amazon's German website since the keys were redeemable here in America. I got Civilization V and Civilization V: Gods and Kings together for around $11.80.

Glad to hear it, sir. It's a damn fun game for quite a long time. Nice to hear you got it so cheap, too. If you're interested in strats and things, the top (i think he's the top, at least..) Civ5 player's youtube is http://www.youtube.com/user/sbfmaddjinn. He also plays X-com (which is fun as hell to watch) and a couple of other games. The LPs are uber long though (since civ is a long game.)

Im not particularly skilled in RTS games since i can't play against alot of different human competition but one thing i can tell you is that if you don't have a whole **** load of free time on your hands your gonna have trouble enjoying most RTS'es.

Doesnt mean i don't enjoy them....
