What I find better than a damp sponge is steel wool, put one in a shallow tin (bend in the sides to hold it in there) and dip the tip of your iron into that. It really cleans everything off and doesn't cool the iron much. I add a fresh drop of solder to the tip again after, to prevent oxidation.

BTW, I'm not talking about brillo pads (especially not the ones with soap embedded in them), but these:


But a damp sponge works too.
