PS3 slim blinking red light issue.

After playing for a hour, my SLIM PS3 gets a blinking red light.

I know that this means overheating, and after I wait for a while, i'm able to boot up my SLIM ps3 again. I thought this would only happen when I'm playing a game, but now it is happening when I'm just idling around the XMB.

Couple things that I don't understand is that the fan speeds stay consistent, and usually they are suppose to sound like a jet engine right before the PS3 overheats. I haven't replaced the thermal paste yet, its still using the old crusty thermal paste.

Eventually I'll try to replace the thermal paste and pads and see if this makes the blinking red lights go away.

But what else could be the problem though? I don't understand why the fan speeds don't start to ramp up if its overheating.

Change the Thermal Paste as you suggested
and while you change it take a good look at the fans wires specially the gray wire

does your ps3 have enough briefing space? (recommended by sony 4inch to every side at least)

what about your room tempereature (its getting summer.... maxmimum 22° C)
also cleaning can solve your problem

heres a quick cleaning trick without opening(it does not clean at all but it pushes the dust in the case where the fans are away)

power off(not only shut down/electricity connection off) -> finger on eject button -> power on

all fans now rotate with 100% of their speed for ~15 seconds
after that power off and on again...
i do it once a month and it really helps
