If your like me you've wanted a way to back up your dvd collect in order to play it via the PS3 that doesn't take hours to process. This is probably not new but I have not seen any threads posted before using this method. So here it goes, the simplest, fastest way to back up your dvd collection.

1. Download DVD Decyrpter.
2. Install and run it.
3. Go to Tools-->Settings-->IFO Mode Tab. Change the File Splitting to None under Options.


4. Under the Mode menu select IFO.
5. Insert the DVD you want to back up and wait for it to load.
6. On the Input Tab select the item with the most time. That will be the movie.


7. On the Stream Processing Tab Deselect everthing except the video and any audio channels you would like.


8. Click on the DVD to Harddrive button and wait for the movie to process. It will take anywhere from 10-20 minutes depending on your computer.
9. Locate the output directory that was created and navigate into the movie folder and into the Video_TS folder.
10. Find the file that has the .vob extension and rename it to the [name of the move].mpg. You can delete the other files as they are not needed.


And there you have it. A high quality back up that the PS3 will play. If you don't already have a media server set up you can find a tutorial that Controller had posted here. I know that this method sounds simple but I have yet to find a movie that this didn't work with. The file sizes are fairly large ranging from 3 to 6 GB but the quality is that of watching the DVD directly. The whole process takes me about 15 minutes per movie, a hole lot better then recompressing them for hours.

This only rarely works properly. In most cases, the resulting VOBs have a messed up timecode, which states that the film is far longer or shorter than it actually is, or that it has no length at all (00:00:00). Basically, you can't fast forward or rewind it on the PS3, or even use the 'go to' function.

You also short-sightedly suggested that the file splitting be set to 'none', when you quite clearly are required to set it to 4GB if you want to be able to transfer it to the PS3 or store on an external FAT32 drive - some resultant VOBs are larger than 4GBs, mostly from dual-layer DVDs.

Also - and this is a big point - there is no reliable and easy way to manage subtitles using this tutorial, without a lot of extra work.

Conclusion: a reliable encoder tailored to PS3 settings for 5.1 sound, and video with no quality loss is the way to go, unless you want to go mad with frustration and varied results.

Yeah man. Thanks. I've been using these two for about a year. I was just considering trying out a program which makes a direct copy of the video instead of re-encoding it. Turns out there really isn't a reliable way to do it.

With handbreak, you can get files which play with 5.1 too, if you create an MKV file with AC3 sound and then send that through mkv2vob which will leave you with an MPG with 5.1 which will play on the PS3.

You can also get DVD quality video, using the right settings.
