Recommended FAT model?

Hey.

I'm considering of getting rid of my V12 Slim PS2 and get one that allows me to install a HDD in it (I have no interest in HD PRO).

I do not want to chip the console, I use FMCB/OPL (or SwapMagic for OPL/ESR incompatible games), and Breaker Pro for PS1 games, so I still want a reliable laser.

After doing some research it seems the best models are either SCPH-3900x or SCPH-5000x, but I don't know which one is the best out of the two.
Could anyone enlighten me please?

Thanks in advance.

SCPH-39xxx I believe is the most common and hard wearing of the fatties....because all the rest are dead!

I got that one and MCFreeBoot going and what not, remember finding a website with detailed rundown of all the models and the crappy lasers in some of them, with a lot of comments from people that actually sounded intelligent....can't remember where, it was a year or so ago...I'm sure i found it on a link from psx-scene ps2 forum -> MCFreeBoot site -> site comparing the models...

Sorry can't be more help, but I made sure to get the SCPH-39xxx model because of it so there we go

Thank you.
I hear that model is loud though, but also that you can fit a 5000x model fan to fix that. Any idea about that?

Yes it is loud, without the hard drive in the bay it isn't. But when you use a hard drive it's like a fan heater, not the noise of the hard drive though strangely enough, it actually speeds the fan up automatically.

But I suppose you don't notice it if you're playing a game.

How's the noise on that one?
And as I mentioned, I plan on using an HDD aswell, but I will be using the disc drive for PS1 games and the occasional incompatible PS2 game.
I don't care about the DVD player, don't plan on using the PS2 for that.

Also, what about PS1 compatibility? I read 390xx is better than 500xx on that side.
The only downside I can see so far with the 390xx is the fan noise, and apparently that can be fixed by replacing it with a 500xx.
I'd just like some confirmation before I spend my money.
