Raspberry PI competition

A local business beside my university are running a competition where the winner gets a three month work placement.

To enter they want to know what I would do with a raspberry PI. Im entering in a Media Center/ Emulation Machine.

In the application they want me to explain my device like I would if I was developing a prototype. I only began university three months ago so the only bit of programming ive done so far has been 4 weeks of MATLAB and 4 weeks of EXCEL so I understand this will not be an easy task.

Ive a few questions if anybody would like to help me out.

Will I be able to use existing operating systems and media codecs or will I have to develop everything myself from scratch?

Im going to have to control this device somehow.. Would it be possible to use an existing smart phone app to control it via wifi or is my only option a USB keyboard and mouse?

Any help or a point in the right direction would be great.

PS.. This is my 100th post.. Ive followed many forums over the years but rarely post.. I reckon this is the first time Ive ever hit 100 and this is the only forum I still visit every day ..
Thanks for everything PS3HAX

have a look at xbmc mate,

i have a pi at home that i use to stream videos from a nas using the software and has a lovely gui as well, some that is quite easy to edit. not to mention the distro is simple to install and understand too and no need to have a linux background either.

there is also an android phone app that works as a remote too (tho all your video/audio information has to be added to the xbmc database to work correctly)
