Several CFW questions

1. Today I got my hands on a backwards compatible PS3 that was already installed with firmware SC-36 Hermes. I am interested in playing the latest backups and was wondering if anyone could tell me whether or not I should stick with this firmware or upgrade to a different one. If I needed to upgrade I would also like to please ask for directions as to the best way to do it all so as to remain safe from causing a brick in doing so.

2. I have some official sony wireless 7.1 headphones I was using with my original ps3 on official firmware, but it seems I can't use them with my jailbroken system. The mic works, but not the audio. I'm thinking it definitely has to do with the firmware being below 3.55 or whatever they decided the requirement should be. Are there currently any known solutions to this or anything in the works? Really need this headset due to living with a lot of people right now.

3. I'd like to know everything I can do to protect my console from anything like accidental updates and whatever I should be backing up in case of a brick of system crash. If there's any packages I should be installing to help prevent some of this I'd be very grateful to know.

Thanks a lot everyone!

Nice score.
Your headset will work on consoles 3.70 and higher so you'll need to use a 4.21 or 4.30 CFW rather than staying on a 3.55 CFW, which in doing so will negate the need to keep looking for eboot fixes for games upto 4.30.

You'll want to download and install Rebug toolbox 2.01(or 2.0). Run the app and find the QA enable option. After you enable the option exit out to the main XMB and hover over Network Settings and on your controller Press L1+L2+L3+R1+R2+dpad down and some debug options below will appear. If they dont try enable again and input the buttons again.

Now go to Rebug.me and grab the zip package that will give you the download link to Rebugs 4.21.2 REX firmware or the Rebug 4.30 firmware(4.21.2 is the better of the 2 atm but for beginners I would suggest 4.30).

When you get the pup file dont forget to rename it as PS3UPDAT.PUP, and also make sure to remove any discs from your disc drive while updating.

Once you have reflashed your PS3 with the Rebug firmware open the toolbox app and change the System Mode option from Normal to Rebug. This will spoof your console to 4.31 and stop accidental update... unless there is a higher OFW from S**Y.

Followed your directions and now the headset appears to be working just fine. Thanks so much for helping me out with that.

Another thing I thought of is the hard drive in my original slim model was 320GB and this one is only 60GB. Do you know if it might be possible to switch them out so I can keep that larger hard drive?

Yeah looks like I messed up on that. If I have to reformat the old drive in order to use it than that's fine, I just want to make sure it's ok to do that and/or is that even the way it works before trying.
