Smile Totally new, what should I use? USB? External HDD? and what size?

I see that there is a lot of different ways of playing backups and different firmware to go with it (or backup managers, or whatever it is)

I was wondering what are the highest recommended? and the most compatible with releases? And what is the full list of things I need? From what I've seen on tutorials I need "kmeaw CFW" and files for Jailbreaking, downgrading and a backup manager, is this all?
  • I have a fat PS3 with 55GB (I guess that's 60GB, with 5 hidden)
  • I will be downgrading from Version 3.72 to 3.55
Lastly, what size USB should I buy for all of this to work? Or do I need an external HDD? (Again, what size?)

I am able to use Ethernet cable to transfer stuff in-between (with the help of this http://www.ps3hax.net/2011/02/how-to...speeds-100mbs/) (Does that mean I only need a mediocre USB to fit the 150mb~ downgrade/jailbreak files?)

Thanks, hope to get all of this answered.

ok you have to be on ofw 3.55 like you already said (with a hardwareflasher or downgrade service!!!)

there are different types of CFWs the most popular are mady by "kmeaw(3.55)", "Rebug(4.21 and new 4.30)" and "Rogero(4.21 and 4.30)"

i recommend rogeros fw CEX 4.30 v2.05 (its the newest)
as backup manager i recommend multiMAN(mM)
install the newest BASE version and then you are able to update
dont download any multiman-pkg files which have "UPD" in it they are just updates and not mM itself!

so you need a USB-stick(fat32) with at least 256mb to install CFWs and package files

now to the games:
if you want to use your internal HDD as game-storage (i dont recommend that since you only have 60Gb where 10gb will already be used by the PS3) you have 2 ways to transfer the gamedata to it
1) via USB-STICK/external HDD
2) FTP

eHDD

1) put the game folder ("BLES0000" or "BLUS0000") into the root of the usb-device: X:\BLES0000\ or somewhere else
2) plug it into your PS3 and go to multiMAN's filemanager (select+start)
and copy the BLES0000 folder into the "GAMES" folder of the internal HDD
3) go to mM's XMMB (homepage select+start again) and at the games list choose search for new games

FTP

to use FTP (file transfer protocol) which transfers data via the network u need a FTP-server on the ps3 and an FTP-client on the PC
multiMAN has a built-in FTP server which is automaticly online when you start mM... as FTP-client i recommend FileZilla... in mM go to system-info and check your IP-address
when you are on FileZilla(on PC) you have to type the IP of the PS3 and press connect (no username/password/port needed)
then you have access to the whole ps3 internal HDD usb-ports and so on
copy the game-folder (BLES0000 or BLUS0000) to the "GAMES" folder of the PS3
when youre PC and PS3 are connected to the router with LAN it will go very fast
if your PC and/or the PS3 is connected it may take a while (500-1500 kb/s)
if its too slow for you you are able to connect the PS3 directly with a LAN-cable to the PC (you may need crossover) this is much faster (about 30mb/s)
see tutorials to see how you do that

another way to play games on the PS3 is to use an external HDD or a large usb-stick(NOT RECOMMENDED!!!)
eHDD

put the game on the "GAMES" folder which is on the root in the eHDD/stick
plug it to your ps3 and change the settings to external in mM and then launch it
the bigfiles have to be internal

i hope that helped
