Restoring Saves From Ps3 Hardrive

So my fat 40gb ps3 ylod'd and I fixed it a few times and got over a year more out of it.However, it didnt come back to life for more than a few days the last time I tried fixing it. I then decided to buy a slim ps3. Now, the problem is , I still have the old hardrive and I'd like to transfer the save files. I've read that the ps3's hardrive is encrypted or something along those lines so I won't be able to connect it up to my PC and simply transfer the files onto a flash drive. I can't find any recent articles/posts on the subject, so if there's anything I can do to transfer the saves, I'd be grateful for your help in the matter.

Is it completely dead? If you could revive it for just a couple of minutes you probably have the time to do a full system backup or at least have the time to transfer your saves to a usb stick. If you manage to do a full backup you just restore that to your new system, or if yo manage to pull the saves you can resign them for your new system.

Pretty much, the last time it booted it lasted for around 2-3 days. After that it froze on the xmb as soon as it showed up. After that it froze on the opening sound. I re-heated + applied paste each time.

Well there is of course the option to have it reballed, then it would be good as new.
Check around if anyone offers that service in your country, don't know anyone that does that here in Sweden where I'm from.
It's either that or try one last time getting it started and see what you can salvage, good luck!

Yea there are plenty of shops which reball ps3's in my area, but they cost around £50-£60 , you can get a 12gb ps3 for £120 ish and since I don't need the ps3 I'd rather get the saves from the HDD. Thanks for the suggestion though.
