Downgrade or motherboard
I found on downgrade services on ebay ranging from $40 to $60, but I'm wondering weather I can buy a ps3 motherboard that's on 3.55 firmware and use that in my ps3 slim. Is this possible since the firmware is stored on the nor chip?

First of all, all motherboards won't fit in a slim console. Every motherboards have different layout.
And you won't get consoles below 3.55.
