A usb hub is usually responsible for the change, once you take it off it returns to usb000 and usb001. In my case at least, if you're using a hub don't use reactpsn, it won't work if you're not using the port closest to the bd drive.

I could tell you the exact location, but i am not by my PS3 atm .So browse through them folders with MultiMAN untill you find them .After you confirm them ,delete each empty folder. Restart your PS3 & try again & see if the names are back to normal when you plug in a new USB drive. I have deleted all my empty thumbnail folder so i can say it will not hurt your PS3 in any way .Just make sure you find folders like i mentioned. Anything you browsed through on your USB should have left empty folders on the PS3. Just goes to show how Sony logs every USB device you plug in Scumbags Sony are.. Technically this should not happen really..
